ARF is Down

ARF is Down
I logged onto ARF awhile ago to find out that its hosting company had pulled the plug on ARF and cut it off the internet today without notice. No doubt a lot of ARF members will come over here for awhile until it is up and rolling again.
Didn't ARF go through this a little over a year ago?

Re: ARF is Down
All have been welcome here, and, it remains that way....
Come on in, guys, and, gals. In alot of ways, the basics are set up the same as ARF, so no need to have ARF worries.
We took the same format, and, added some.
Nice, quiet atmosphere here.
Hey, exray, we need you hre!
Your friends are comin'.
Hope Alan gets a more honest host, and, soon.
In the meantime, welcome all ARF'ers.

Re: ARF is Down
Thanks Bill. I hope you have enough server space. When people get word of this site there'll be a flood. It's ironic that there was a thread about being addicted to ARF just before it went down. It was a VERY long thread.

Re: ARF is Down
I appreciate this forum, but I still feel like I've been 86'd from my favorite club. Good thing Curt wasn't around for this.
So Bill, how do you post photos?

Re: ARF is Down
This site works by you need a photo host, like photobucket.
You copy the photo link , and, paste it in your post.
The forum will get the photo from the other site automatically, as with ARF, nd, Video Karma.

Re: ARF is Down
Hi guys. Thought i would have withdraw symptoms without ARF . Sure am glad this site is still here. As far as ARF goes is the hosting company phpBB? I see these letters at the bottom of the ARF announcement. Maybe all of us could contact them and tell them how they suck

No, phpBB is the software that makes this forum, my forum (Philco Phorum) and ARF possible. phpBB is not a site host.

I use Godaddy. It has both shared and dedicated servers.

Did Curt Reed decide he wanted to take ARF with him? Seems ironic in timing.

It is odd timing for sure.

Re: ARF is Down
I tried logging on to the temporary ARF site and it wouldn't take my user name or password. Then, I decided to re-register and the site said it would send a confirmation email I would have to activate. I didn't receive that either. Oh well, there isn't much on there anyway; just a few new threads.

Re: ARF is Down
What Alan at ARF really needs to do is to set the forums up to automatically delete threads on individual forums after a specified time. Classifieds, for instance, probably need deleted after six months, and the clubhouse as well.
I can see leaving the Antique Radio forum on for a couple of years since that is the main reason for the forums in the first place. I can't see the reason for any threads being on there after two years. That would save tons of server space.

And, then would you mind telling me how we are going to help future generations?

Re: ARF is Down
I just miss the forum, and I miss Curt. And I wish stuff would stay the same.
But of course it doesn't.
I think Alan is probably devastated and trying desperately to make things right.
I don't think we should second guess him or play arm chair quarterback. He needs our support and to know we're here for him whatever form that takes.

Bill, these sites are message boards, not textbooks.

Wake up, and, smell the coffee!
Message boards are a line of communication. Where this generation is concerned, maybe the only one left!

Re: ARF is Down
The classifieds didn't really go back that far, I discovered that when I was searching for a post that was a few months old. I'm not sure about the other forums like the Clubhouse, but recently I've found helpful posts/threads on ARF from the early 2000's. I'd really hate to see that information lost.

Re: ARF is Down
To the best of myknowledge, Alan has saved all the forum. He owns the server, but, the host has it.
When he finds a new host, likely a dedicated one, which will cost money, that server will have to be shipped to new host.
Once there, and, connected, it has to be configured in, then, Alan has to un lock the forums.
Locking them pretty much saved the data from destruction.

Re: ARF is Down
I don't understand all this server stuff, but I would think if Alan owned the server that he could keep it at his house.

Re: ARF is Down
No, he can't. It has to be physically connected to the equipment that transmits to the internet.
