An open ground (return) in the phono system or phono/radio transfer switch, as well as proximity to a switching power supply.

YMMV

Look for open circuits or poor connections in wired equipment associated with the radio/phono. For example the connections to the phono cartridge. The cartridge may have also failed. If the noise is in the "radio" position of the selector switch, look for broken wires to the antenna. If the chassis has not been serviced for the filter capacitors and replacement of any wax type paper capacitors that should be done too. Try a pocket portable radio in the AM band in the vicinity of this unit. If that radio has the same noise then it is external noise, the pocket radio can be used to find that noise. Things like battery chargers, power supplies and most any other portable or digital device can make excessive RF noise that is modulated at what is heard.
