New Project - Silvertone model 18
New Project - Silvertone model 18
I've started working on a Sears and Roebuck Silvertone model 18 AM/ FM, I have already been into this and replaced some of the caps. I haven't changed the electrolytes yet, mainly because it is a real pain. I just ordered a bunch from AES. I also bought a couple tubes. So far I've got about $50 in it. I hope it Works.

If it's the model i'm thinking about, its a nice sounding radio when restored. I highly recommend that you replace the electrolytics when your able to, as if you dont, its like putting a new plug on a rotten cord. I realize they are a pain but i feel that you can do it. Good luck on your restoration!

This is a nice radio, with no scuffs or cracks. You can tell that it is one of the early FM radios. It is a transformer set, not AA5. It has an RF amplifier and 6V6 output. And underneath it is crowded. Oh well, that just makes it more of a challenge.
I guess Bill wants this in the main forum. It feels comfortable here. BTW- I also see what he means about participation. Out of the last 8 threads, 7 are mine. Surely, I'm not the only one who was bullied off of NA and found a nice site here.

We're glad to have you here Terry along with the other members that have helped out on here. Yes, that is a nice radio and you will be rewarded from your hard work with a nice sounding radio for it's size. One observation i have had with these older FM sets is that they do tend to drift a little, especially during warm up. If that happens with yours, don't be alarmed as that is the nature with these. The newer FM sets had AFC added to lock in the stations which corrected the drift.

I'm including photos of my isolation transformer and variable transformer. The radio works, now I've got to find a place to tie down those caps.

The 6T8 tube tested bad. I've sent for a replacement. You would think I'd test all the tubes at once.
