Can you identify this Zenith AM/FM clock radio?
Re: Can you identify this Zenith AM/FM clock radio?
Here is a pic with a date. I would tend to agree. The dial and control layout is right, as is the logo.

It looks like a variation of this model.

That's it. Too bad they didn't show a photo of the bottom. On mine you can see it had a tube layout label which most likely had a model number. The back does not have a model number.

It'll most likely be a '59 or a '60. Try a search on radiomuseum.

I couldn't find anything at the radiomuseum.

The one bad thing about late model Zenith tube radios is they only put the model number on the paper with the tube layout glued to the bottom. They could of easily stamped it onto the back cover, but they didn't.

Re: Can you identify this Zenith AM/FM clock radio?
Thanks Willy!
I saw the zenith s-43497 on mine but at first glance it looked like part of the address and was actually in smaller type than the address. I'm used to seeing bold model numbers.
Anyway
I purchased this radio last evening while Dana and I went out for dinner. We found an antique shop open after 5PM! This radio was listed for $27 and was offered to me for $22. I brought it home and powered it up on the Variac, it works fine! Absolutely no AC hum and great selectivity and sensitivity. Also no chips of cracks and the back cover is in great condition. The only issue so far is the AM/FM switch. The plastic knob is worn on the inside which should be an easy repair. Even though this radio plays great I believe it deserves to be re-capped!

You may find that is has mostly ceramic caps and few, if any, paper ones. The filter caps in the later Zenith radios like that one are still fairly reliable, in my experience. I wait until I get hum before I recap them. The band switch is notoriously dirty on the later Zenith AM-FM sets. Models with the slide switch for a band switch are especially problematic. Nice score, Mr Mez, have fun with it.

That generic type of radio is an excellent performer. I had never seen a clock radio adaptation of it. I assume they used two smaller speakers as opposed to the single the more pedestrian models used?

I opened it up and found it has 1 speaker on the right (looking from the front). It has a 35C5 as well as a selenium rectifier, this is due to the number of tubes in the AC/DC filament string.

That probably has 1 can with 3 small value electrolytic caps in it and the rest ceramic disc. I have two late model AC/DC Zenith tube radios and neither has been recapped and they likely will never it. The X334 will need it's tubes replaced the Z374 has not one issue.
