AK 40 restoration
Hi, all. My AK 40 is back together, and plays well, with good room volume, on my roughly 75 foot antenna. My question - one of the audio transformers was open, so I replaced it with on from Antique Radios. When I removed the old one from the can, by heating it in the oven, I found that most of the winding turns were not only open, but appear to have segments of each turn, about 1/2 inch or so, missing, completely gone. Anybody have any ideas how this happened? (They were not stuck to the inside of the can.) Thanks. Charles Stevens

Re: AK 40 restoration
My guess is that dampness in the tar corroded all of them open. You might expect more problems like this in the future. It was likely stored in a dam p place for a long time......

Open windings
Bill - You're probably right. The metal cabinet has some slight rust where the paint is chipped. And in reference to your earlier comment, I have replaced all the caps in the power supply and in the main chassis, and all of the non-wirewound resistors. On some of those I had to clean the ends of the turns and the underneath side of the screws to get the resistance to read the proper value. Thanks again for your help. Charles
