I used to live in the stream that clobbers Buffalo where it crossed southern Michigan. It seems to start in Chicago and flows across to Buffalo. It will be 70 here on Saturday.

I dunno my last one went in July '06, wasn't a big deal...Wildcat445 wrote:
There is never a good time to replace a water heater. That is just a sloppy, messy, heavy job. Changing a toilet is almost as bad. Good luck, Doc.

It sets in the garage so I ran a garden hose out to the driveway, drained while I went to Lowes and bought one exactly like it(well color is different)... Undid two threaded couplings(no soldering required), the electric line, set it on the hand truck and out to the curb it went... Cleaned up behind it, ran a new metal vent for dryer(also behind heater) and set the new one in place... Reconnected couplings, turned on water so it could fill while I connected electric, done in approx two hours including trip to Lowes...
The one I bought had a small dent in it so they knocked off $50, complete job was less than $200, bought a couple smoke detectors with the saved money...
If this one last as long as old heater, I have approx four more years, maybe I'll go get another while this style is still available(don't laugh wouldn't be first time I bought a WH before I actually needed it)...
As far as cold yeah there is frost on the punkins this morning, currently 23*

Tom, I will call you if my water heater dies. You sound like you are better at water heaters than I am.

Nah, Tom had it way to easy.

Had to deal with preventing mold as water started to head towards the basement bathroom wall as well as the floor drain when it went (luckily I was there). Had to build a dam out of towels until I turned off the water and natural gas to the unit. Since the unit was installed by twiddle dee and twiddle dumber about 20 years ago, I had to disassemble the tank's flue to shut the cold supply off as they soldered the ball valve so it's lever couldn't be fully shut off until the flue was out of the way! This was a fly by night operation install....
Had to have a "tall and skinny" unit installed thanks to the former owner's remodeling project in the basement. Very tight fit between a wall and the furnace. Also.
Here we have to have these types of things inspected. I hope all goes well with the city inspector. This is a natural gas unit so not only was there fun with copper lines that needed to be "tidy'd up" , but fun with cramped black iron pipe as well.
I don't mind paying for the plumber as if there are any issues with the pulling of permits, final inspection or problems, it's on him, NOT me.
It is nice to have hot water again during this cold weather.

Re: It's Getting Cold Out
I'll take 62 degrees any day compared to 32 degrees, which is about normal around this time of year. It's 38 degrees now with some drizzle. It's been getting in the low 40's this past week and that's a bit on the warm side. If it was 62 degrees now, I wouldn't be wearing a hooded sweatshirt, a long sleeve tee shirt and jeans right now. I'd have on a short sleeve shirt, lightweight pants and probably flip-flops on. No sweatshirt or jacket unless i'm walking more than a short distance.

When it gets dark here the North wind picks up a lot, and, then, it really turns bitter... Cold is expected to stay until Sunday. Oh, Joy. My pt guy says we will be going outside, cold, or, not. BRRRRRRR.
He comes today. Oh, joy, Freeze, and, pain, and, torture.

Re: It's Getting Cold Out
Bill, I would bet a halogen radiant heater would be good for your arthritis. They do great for my bursitis and sinusitis. They are like sitting in front of a warm fire in the fireplace.

Re: It's Getting Cold Out
I just took the mutts for their morning stroll thru the neighborhood. It is 48 degrees here. I wore my long pants, but I sure could have used a pair of insulated flip flops. I don't supposed I am going to illicit any sympathy from you guys, am I?
IT rained here Friday and yesterday.

Well, for a change it was nearly the same temp here. I burned the leaves and now I smell like a smoked sausage. There was enough of a breeze I didn't need the fan to catalyze the burn.

Re: It's Getting Cold Out
Bentley hogged the covers last night and my feet got cold. I remember a time when the dog slept out in the shed with the tractor. Bentley feels like he is being abused if he has to sleep on the floor of the bedroom. On carpet. We got him a dog bed and he is far too regal for that.

Re: It's Getting Cold Out
I think it is worse to work on a kitchen drain than a toilet. That can be really nasty.
It only got to 68 here today and they are talking about us getting more rain. They started painting our house today. I was a good day for that, certainly not too hot.

Re: It's Getting Cold Out
I agree with the kitchen sink thing.
Yuk
It's been raining here to. Only difference is, it's like 30*F. Tomorrow's high is supposed to be 30* as well, with wind gusts of 45+ mph.
Not a good painting day!
