In WWII, they experimented with some success with stringing incandescent lamps along the front edges and nose of anti-submarine seaplanes that they could dim down as they approached a surfaced submarine on the horizon. Obviously it did not "bend" the background light around the plane, but it did help hide the dark silhouette of an approaching aircraft against the sky and make it less noticible until it was nearer the observer. I don't think it ever made it into service though, because of the difficulty of dimming the lighting appropriately as the target was approached.
