The price of 12AX7's
The price of 12AX7's
I put a Telefunken 12AX7 in my Magnavox stereo a couple days ago. I just saw one advertised "on that other forum" for $160! I could sell that one tube, and get enough cash to pay for all the other parts I need. A tube is a tube to me. It is a good thing that the frau's killer cat, Sweet Pea, is laying on that stereo, guarding the 12AX7 from the "twang and bang" crowd!

Yup, the hi mu audio preamp tubes from certain vendors are nuts. I think the price of all NOS audio tubes will eventually go nuts. Laying in some supplies for 5AR4's, 6CA7's, 6550's, 6L6GC's etc. Not for profit, just to have some.
You should sell it and buy another Magnavox aircraft carrier!

That's a good idea. I dropped a Mullard 12AX7 on the cement floor a couple of days ago and wanted to cry. I know how much that will cost to replace. It almost impossible to get this stuff anymore. The guitar crazy people watch Ebay like a hawk and will bid any price to get them.

I have several 12AX7's in various brands. Magnavox "aircraft carriers" can get expensive. Maybe I need to put some on the 'bay?
EDIT.....I just checked my stash, and I don't have a Mullard 12AX7, or I would send it to you, MR MEZ. Mine are reboxed for the most part anyway. Not worth much for other than using myself. I think JJ sells 12AX7's. I have a quad of JJ 6BQ5's in one of my Magnavox stereos, and they seem to be fine. Why would somebody pay up for NOS? OH. I forgot. Tube amp guys. Got it.

Sometimes I don"t think they use those 12AX7's. They put them under a glass dome and worship them!

I've got them to use as they were intended. To each his own, I guess. Some of those guys sure pay big money for something they are afraid to use. If the tube amp guys find out I have put a Telefunken 12AX7 in an old stereo, they might send some dude with a black shirt and white tie, with no neck, to have a chat with me.

To me a tube is a tube, especially a pre-amp tube. If I needed some I would just go to Fair radio sales and get them. I know a lot people do not have that convenience like I do, but they do ship

I have been to Fair Radio a few times. It"s about 90-100 miles west of me. A fun place to go through.

I imagine it would be quite a ways from you. It is a place where you can get side tracked from what you planned to go there for. You can also end up spending lots of time in there when you had no plans to.. I've went there to either get some tubes or capacitors and ended up being in there for much much longer than I should of been.

Re: The price of 12AX7's
The last time I went to Fair Radio was in 1976. I rode over from Indiana on my motorcycle to get an RT-70 and power supply. Part way there, I started to pass a tractor-trailer and one of the tractors' rear wheels came off. I drew back behind the truck and the wheel rolled off toward the left, hit something as it was leaving the road, bounced once and there was one of those mailboxes with Uncle Sam holding the box. That wheel went through that plywood cutout like it was a sheet of wet newspaper, slashing off Sams' upper torso. Ah, the good old days.
