An overview of my tube radio collection
I'm not exactly what you would refer to as an advanced collector, though I have been collecting for years. Mostly I get things in my price range (cheap) that need some work or some replacement parts. As a result, my collection has only modest value. But I do have a broad variety of brands and types. I'll break them down in separate replies. But first, a look at the collection as I see it stored in my garage:

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
I have to say the ones that interest me most are the earlier models, mostly because I don't really understand the principle or how they were operated. Here are the tabletop battery powered radios from the 1920s. And yes, I have two Radiola 18s.

I also have a few of the "portable" models that look like small lunch boxes. These interest me largely because they closely model transistor portables that soon followed them.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
The type I have in greatest abundance are the plastic/bakelite shelled tabletop models.

I only have one tombstone... a family heirloom, of sorts.

Only one console unit. The story behind this is I bought it at an antique auction for $2, because one of the pairs of legs was missing. I ended up removing the other one as well, and fabricating replacement legs. It's a Grundig, by the way.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
In addition, I do have a couple of Atwater Kents and some other smaller tubers stored away in boxes. Too much trouble to photograph those today.
As an aside, if anyone wants or needs any of the plastic radios for parts, just let me know. I have very little attachment to most of those (except the Crosleys, which my wife is using for decorations).

Good catch. I forgot to display that one. It's a radio/phonograph.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
Looks like a fine collection to me. I am the same way as far as price range. These are more of a hobby for me and not for the value. I have had to cut back recently due to so many,200 at least may be close to 300-400. So now I try to get only RCA or table top models. The bakelite tabletops have always been my favorite. Collect and get what gives you enjoyment. Not collect what others say should give you enjoyment.

If those sets were mine they'd be in my house. Very nice collection. The early ones work on the principle of RF , or, Radio Frequency....
Nice sets...........

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
Sadly, I haven't the space in my house for the collection because I (and my wife) have so many other collections inside the house.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
Boy, does that sound familiar!
You have several radios that I have. You have a Silvertone (model number escapes me at the moment), the one with the mesh grill, like mine. Mine is missing a knob that yours has. Mine has the knobs that yours is missing. Nice collection. I understand the space issue. My wife is going to have Magnavox stereos stacked like cordwood in her Arizona room. Thanks for sharing!

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
that bright red Motorola is the first one of that model I have seen in red. They are usually a tan/brown color. Nice collection.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
The Motorola is one of the more recent additions. I no longer actively seek out tube radios (for obvious space limitation reasons), but that one screamed at me from an antique mall booth, and it simply would not allow me to leave without it. You can well imagine that means I got it very cheaply.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
Greg, you have some very nice radios. Too bad they can't be inside the house. (But I understand). I hope at least, the garage is at least somewhat climate controlled.

Re: An overview of my tube radio collection
Well, we live in a temperate region, not subject to too many extremes... but no, there's no real climate control in the garage. Worse still, it's also where I work on another hobby... knifemaking... which generates a lot of dust.
