I just saw a documentary that was really good. Some of you from the 60s that liked the late 60s stuff like doors, woodstock musicians and others of that time may like it as well. It was a Documentary called searching for sugarman. It was about a fellow named Sixto Rodiguez who cut a couple of records. The record execs thought he would be the next thing. His records flopped here in the us and he didn't record other than a single 45. He then went on to become a laborer cleaning out old Detroit houses, getting a degree and then going back to cleaning. While all this was going on his records made it to South Africa and he became a hit. He sold more than Elvis or the stones there. He didn't know about it until his daughter found about it on the internet from a webpage on him. Regardless if you like that the music of the 60s or his music the documentary is a really good movie. Here is a trailer

searching for sugarman

Another good documentary is the story about Dick Proenneke called alone in the wilderness. Its about a fellow who goes into the Alaskian wilderness and lives off the land. He builds his cabin and even makes wooden hinges for his house. It is a really good story and they are two parts to it. Well worth watching. Here is a video to it and sometimes it pops up on PBS.

Alone in the wilderness

IF you can overlook a couple of times with bad language and the late 60s theme of "going against the establishment " Sugarman is a excellent movie. Alone in the wilderness is probably ok even for young kids but it does have at least a scene of him killing a animal for its meat and dressing it. Both to me are well worth watching.

Rodriguez had a huge following here in Australia and I believe South Africa as well.

Brilliant lyrics in every track on the record.

He seems to have been largely ignored in the US.

His "Cold Fact" album is still one of my all time favorites.

Do yourself a favor and get a copy of this album.

I have the empire of the air if it is the PBS one I think made by Ken Burns. I heard about the sugarman movie and my wife surprised me with it. I looked for his music the last time I went to the record store but they didn't have it. I will have to keep looking. You are right Ron about his lyrics, if you listen to them and think about them you can tell he id a really brilliant and a thinker. Of all the famous musicians alive I would have to pick him as to spend a afternoon with to talk with. He seems to be a wise and caring person.

Not too pricey but worth every cent

Thanks Ron. I have seen a few out there on Ebay. Only thing is I don't do ebay anymore. I lost all the login info. My wife does go to amazon and it has it I think. I may have to ask for his records for my birthday or Christmas.
