Hi. I've got an easy project on the bench right now for a customer at my church.
It's about a 1960 ish GE five tube table radio in a green plastic case.
It uses an interlock for ac disconnect. Has a 4" front mounted speaker, and, the circuit board mounts vertically on the front of the case with five screws.
After taking it apart, and, examinning the set,and replacing two paper capacitors, I decided to bring it up very slowly on the variac. Filters were badly shorted, and, it took some time for them to heal. I didn't mind that, as he doesn't want to spend much money on it.
Well, I definately get a power supply hum from very weak filters that aren't quite open, but, not good, either. At first, I got no sound. I tapped tubes, I had a dirty tube socket for the 12BE6 oscilator tube, and, the tube is also touch itself, so, that needs replacing as well.
Well, it started receiving stations weakly, at first. I carefully adjusted the RF antenna adjustment on the tuner, and, now, radio is getting stations.
Tommorrow I will report that the radio is worth fixing.
I played it for several minuites.
Very Happy

Those old filters would have to go before anything else if it were mine.

Filter caps are always bad on those radios. The tube sockets are usually loose and make poor connection with the tubes hanging in there sideways. I take an ice pick and squeeze the tube socket terminals together so they make better contact. If the couplet is good, you should be good to go. If anybody gives me a radio to fix and "doesn't want to spend much money" on it, they usually just get it back. Statements like that put the servicer behind the eight ball from jump street. There is nothing fair about that. It costs what it costs. It can stay broke if the customer wants free or cheap. Good luck, Bill.

Regards

Well, I wanted to make sure it was worth fooling with, first. Couplet seems to be alright.
I was even more concerned about the IF transformers. I talked to him this morning. He agreed to fourty five bucks to fix it. I can live with that as long as nothing else major goes wrong.
It's a simple set.
Just simply a pain in the arse.

Finally took some pictures, but, haven't had time to install them in Photo bucket, yet. Also my less than one year old camera has issues. Looks like I'll be returning that.
I'll get pictures installed as quickly as I can. It's been a rough week.

Well, good news...... Radio is nearly finnished....
Here is what I have replaced:
2 electrolytics.
2 paper capacitors.
1 Tube. 12BA6
I antenna insulating sleeve.

I tried it with board out, and, I was having reception issues along with a variable audio hum.
I put circuit board back in, and, remounted it. Remounted ac power socket.
Still was having tunning problems. Tried wiggling tubes. No go. Tapped tubes. When I got to the 12BA6 I F tube, tapping made radio louder. Tapped it again, and, radio quit playing. The antenna wire that goes to the tuner broke, and, was coroded. Insulating sleeve had turne to concrete. replaced sleeve, and, re connected, and, soldered wire.

Replaced tube. Radio played much better.Variable hum gone, reception greatly improved, and, much better playing.
Played it for almost thirty min. and, it stayed fine. Tapped tubes, no problem.
Next step, cleanning case, make sure orig. power cord is good, and, upon completion of all that, Play it to make sure no problems occur.
Sunday I plan on taking it back to church, and, returning it, repaired, to my friend.
I'm a happy camper........ Very Happy

I ran across a similar issue like that Bill. Years ago I was restoring my wifes grandparents old battery radio. I think its a sears from the 30s. I made a supply for it but I never could get it going. I was able to finally trace it to a wire on the tuning coil if I recall correctly. It had a tuning coil like a car and not the usual tuning capacitor if I am not mistaken. It took me about a year working on it off and on. Those wires broken can be a royal pain. Congrats I expect your friend to be well pleased.
