I dont drive in the dark much but sence it gets dark early i do at times . I was behind some newer car tonight waiting behind it at a light . The small circle of red led lights on it were so bright it was a bit hard on the eyes . Do they need o be so bright ?

The more expensive the car, the brighter the tail lights. The same led's in white serve as the in-town headlights on many cars. Judging by how poor many of the fortunate drivers drive, they must not be doing the trick for them.
Red is the color of taillights because it's the only color that does not effect your night vision, that appears to be changing with LED's. I hated when some cars started using rear amber turn signals, they hurt my eyes as well!
