Webcor phonograph
Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. Can anyone please help me to ascertain any value to a Webcor phonograph I recently found in my basement, serial number 881298? Thanks, Greg

Welcome to the forums.
I'm afraid a serial number will not be of any help on this. What we need to be ablel to help is the model number, and, pictures of the machine as well.

I don't understand why people insist that serial numbers are an important factor in identifying something.

Because they are in many historical pieces. Take guns for instance.

But this really doesn't apply to consumer electronics, except for run numbers or production changes.

Re: Webcor phonograph
I was just answering your question. There are folks who suspect that serial numbers are important because they are, in certain historical items. They carry the idea over to radios, etc. Another example is with Vibroplex bugs and paddles. The SN will tell you the year (s) of manufacture. FYI

Understandable, but on the other hand, I get customers calling me or writing me, and the first thing 90% of them hit me with is those damn serial numbers.
Like I'm gonna know by that what a particular unit is.....

It's bad enough just the model numbers.... even as a tech I don't know or retain the knowledge of every stinkin model ever made in the world.
I tell 'em just bring the thing in, and I'll do my magic on it for them.
That, I'm confident about.

Re: Webcor phonograph
Relax Repairtech, this is a noobie. He's just going off what info he has. That's what most people do, especially if they can't locate something specifically labeled "model #"....

Re: Webcor phonograph
Which you may already have done! The guy is a newbie. Alot of people don't realize that serial numbers are of little good to technicians. We used to get customers bringing in serial numbers asking for info on their stuff.
Repair Tech, if you had any patience, you would understand that the general public isn't oriented into technical information. Our duty is to help them to learn in as nice a way as possible. Not belittle them for bringing the wrong info.

Re: Webcor phonograph
Repairtech, what do you hope to teach the OP by belittling him when he is trying to learn? Why do you bother with this forum when you appear to find everyone else on here to be beneath you, and unworthy of your time and greater intelligence? Why do you feel that your way is the only correct one? When was the last time that YOU made a mistake?

Thanks Bill, the right approach. We all would like to help and generate interest in this hobby. A nooby should be encouraged.

Re: Webcor phonograph
I'd be happy if we could settle on one spelling for "nooby","noobie","newbie".
Just a little comedy relief to ease the tensions-very little.

I never got to like the term. I just look at the date and post count. Welcome, by the way!
