**Update**
Well, the FM quit again and I finally found the cause. The rotary switch has a lever that controls it that is secured by a set screw. The set screw was loose causing the switch not to move fully. Now it's tight and the switch moves correctly.
It sounds great now. Thanks to all for your help.

Glad to hear it. The problems you encountered are quite common with this style and age of radio. You persevered and worked out all the issues. Many would have given up. Kudos.
