Regarding the OPs question, I am going to throw this out here. Some use the "slipcover" method for reinsulating bare wires that had rubber insulation. I guess you can do it that way, it's your set.
I don't ever do that, unless the wire is crammed way into a corner or impossible to get to. 99% of the time, we can access the wire termination, add a new insulated wire and be done.
It just doesn't look right to me, your opinion will vary, plus the shrink costs more than wire. BUT... the question came up about the voltage rating of the insulation. What is the rating of shrink tubing? Is it enough for what we work on?

Just make sure the new wire is 400-600 volt insulation. That will be next to impossible to find at radio shack.

The last Zenith I repaired with dried out wire insulation to the tone control buttons or as Zenith called it the "Radiorgan". I got away with 22AWG.There was shielded wire on there as well,but that was in good condition.
