See ... you didnt fry anything . Transformers can make noises caused by strange circuit voltages . If you unhook the voice coil from a speaker and turn the radio up loud , you can hear the radio play from the transformer .

Sounds like you are getting it figured out .

I drug home another barn fresh broken Philco predicta yesterday . Oh joy !

I just took pictures of set playing on bench. I have to install them in computer, photo bucket, then here. It will be about 45 min. Stick around.

I worked very hard on this set. Sorry, my hands shook a might, so, everything looks fuzzier than it is.
Plus, I think I was too close to set.
I have to adjust the contrast some on most channels. It's not perfect.
I don't know what happenned to vertical. It decided to quit acting up. Now it's completely stable. Go figure.
I'll play it on bench for awhile before I put it back together.
What do you guys think? Ready to call finnished??

I can't wait to see the cabinet, that set brings back memories for me. It's the same set my grandmother had.

Bill, I think that picture looks very good, I would color it "done". You may have a bit too much height, as I don't think that set is a porthole. Nice work, I think I would consider putting it back in the cabinet ad let it play for a bit.

Thanis, John. Actually, I adjusted the sound, and, have that playing better. Tried a different picture tube, and, got a little brighter picture. I think I'm gonna start putting this baby together.
I'm happy it came back to life.
Oh, and, I did adjust height, and, lin. No, it's not a porthole.

When I was young my Dad replaced the CRT in our Admiral with one that was called "aluminized." The picture after that always had a different tint to it.

Well, today I did more work on it. First, at night, picture looked good. During the day, it was dim. So, I replaced the tube, and, it made a noticable difference with brightness, and, contrast.
Allso, remember the swirls you thought were finger prints??
Well, guess what! That was an earlier RCA Victor factory tube that came out of one of my earlier sets. It has a factory defect. I found out that the face on it has a swirl in it quite deeply that is in about the middle, all the way around. Apparently, they didn't polish the face, and, it looks like heck.

I did more adjustments for the sound.I wasn't happy with it at all.
NOw, it sounds fine... I have to do some things with cabinet, and, rewire speaker permanently, and, mount it. Then, I'll put set back together. Not today, unfortunately. But, soon.
Thanks, guys.
Set's playing well, now.

That was fast ! you went from a smoking mess to working in about a day .

I played with this predicta last night . Plugged it in & fired it up . The screen came on and after wiggling some of the tubes it has a full picture . Needs more work .
I might put up a thread about it ??

A note. John Folsom mentionned on the phone that since I'm noticing my picture dims with slight decrease in line volatge, I might want to check voltages on picture tube, and, HV. I think I'll make sure of that.

If a picture tube is a bit weak , changing its filament voltage slightly will do that . But you knew that .

And it looks like people like TV topics . You are at 1300 + views

Well, I'm glad people like the topics. I find it very interesting to work on them.

ON my set, I still appear to have a glitch that I want to check on before I call it finnished. Besides that, I don't like using brightenners, so, put the best picture tubes in I can get.
Last night I mounted the dial eschucheon on the case, and, that's certainly good news. I hope the set gets finnished soon. It's alot closer to it.
Thankds, guys, for the interest.

Okay... All good news! Last problem fixed. I had been missing a resistor on horizontal output tube. It's on the screen. It was supposed to check 100 ohms. INstead, it tested 370 ohms, and, was burned.
I replaced it. Set looks much brighter!
Now, I have to find a speaker that fits, put set back together, andjust it in cabinet, and, play to make sure I'm finnished.
Picture looks good now.
I'm pleased.

Well, did alot more work on it tonight. I have a speaker mounted in the cabinet, and, have wired up speaker system so it can easily be unplugged for chassis removal.
I may have a weak tube that is slightly weak. It seems to change on tunning as it warms up.
Otherwise, I had to replace power cord.
Hoping to get it back tobether tommorrow, but, tommorrow is shipping day.
At latest, it should be going back together Wednesday.

Do you try to rejuvenate picture tubes ? I have one of those beltron tube rejuvenators and used it alot in the 80's . I use it once & a while now on older arcade games . Its about the best one and gentle on tubes .

As a rule I don't believe in rejuvenating them unless I really have to. I don't have a Beltron, and, the present tube tester I have needs re building. My stand by one shorted iit's power transformer last year. I just can't afford one right now....

But, that's all minor. So, what do you guys think??????????? Very Happy Very Happy

It's looking good, but since you have MEtv, Raymond Burr would look closer to period. You do a mighty good job of getting the camera to sync up. Does it take a few trys to get the picture, or do you have a trick to get a good picture?
