Very nice job on the case. How did the radio turn out?
Was it an ac dc set?

The case was the easiest part of the project. The chassis is AC unit. Had to blown volume control, bakelite condenser unit was blown in half, the 6A7 Det-Osc socket wafer was broken, the 2nd IF transf. was bad, plus the normal cap replacement and wire upgrades. Had to ebay 2 dead chassis for parts to make it work. I'm telling you there was a demon living in this unit and the exorcism was ugly. Ha! To tell the true there are still a few wiring up dates I'd like to do but I'm exhausted with this unit at the moment and it is working really well so I'm leaving as is until it quits. I have been rebuilding this as a gift for my wife's birthday and I'm a couple weeks overdue but it is done, except I need to have a piece of glass cut to go on top.

The Philco's have bakelite condenser between the incoming ac line and the on off switch and it has 2 tiny caps in it. I received the radio in non-working needs repair status so I'm not sure what caused the blow outs.
I mean these things were in pieces inside the radio. Best guess, because the electro caps were blown as well,
bad caps or lightning hit it. Who can really say. You purchase these old dogs on line and sometimes they are not so easy to fix. Trying to find a parts only replacements was a real challenge as well. It appears this model is a bit rare so you take what you can find.

Those were called mica molds, by the companny known as mica mold.
They are paper caps in a mica body. Those are always bad.
I think the value on those is .01 , but, not positive. Voltage rating should be 600, instead of the 400 Philco originally used.
They goe from line to chassis, I believe. It's meant to keep rf interference out.
Electrolytic blew because they were shorted, and, somebody plugged it in.

Correct. The Philco schematic parts list calls them a condenser. Tomatoe, tomato, it is what it is and blew up. It would certainly be nice if sellers would show the buyer the underside of the carcass they are about to purchase. An informed decision makes for a happy buyer.
Either way I still like the radio and from what I can see out there for sale I'm still not doing too bad on the investment. That is unless you count lost hair and pateince!!!!!

Nope. I haven't bought a dd machine in years. I got a replacement reproducer for my oak hepplewhite. Ends up the reproducer has a good needle, and, polished beautifully. Looks new. I have to get case parts for that one, and, refinnish. Otherwise, machine is great.
