They take up the sidewalks at 6PM. Also, it is a dry county, no 807...

Haha!
I lived in the area for about two years when I was a younger feller. It ain't the East but its not dead either. When I was there I think it was the Kansas side where you had to buy a "club card" at the door of any restaurant in order to be served alcohol. I don't know if they still do that. It was a pretty silly thing but having grown up in Charlotte where you had to bring your own booze in a brown paper bag and hide it under the table, KCKS seemed pretty advanced at the time. The MO side wasn't as weird but they had some restrictions too that would seem odd to Easterners.
One of my most memorable experiences was coming up from Ottawa where I lived and being in Westport (south side of the city) right before Christmas when it was all lit up and ' suffering' a major snow. We had to stay overnight but the scene was really gorgeous. Westport was cool back then - I would think it still is.
KC has a real Italian neighborhood. Not the nicest part of the city but REAL Italian food. And I remember a Greek restaurant in that same area that put any of Charlotte's Greek restaurants to shame. In the ' old days' it was often commented back then that Charlotte only had Greek restaurants and they were the best this side of Athens
This was all 20-25 years ago. Charlotte cashed in its 'charm' but KC hasn't moved very far. I still own a house in the burbs of KC and the economy has not been very favorable to me
I liked the Kansas City area back then - nothing negative to say. If you've never been to that part of the country before you'll pick up on the differences in people, etc.

Re: Whats to do in Kansas city MO
Check out the "Power & Light District" in the Downtown area. It's a newley developed area of the city with many restaurants, shops, etc. Here's their website:

I've lived in KC all my life, so if you have any other questions, just post them and I'll get back to you.

"I'm going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
I'm going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy little women there
And I'm gonna get me one
I'm gonna be standing on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
I'm gonna be standing on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
With my Kansas City baby
And a bottle of Kansas City wine
Well I might take a train
I might take a plane
But if I have to walk
I'm goin' just the same
I'm going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy little women there
And I'm gonna get me one
(guitar solo)
Now if I stay with that woman
I know I'm gonna die
Gotta find a brand new baby
That's the reason why
I'm going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy little women there
And I'm gonna get me one

Re: Whats to do in Kansas city MO
That song was all I knew about KC when I moved there in 1967. So of course I went to 12th & Vine to look for a pad.
At that time it was not the neighborhood for a long-haired white kid to remain healthy. My adrenal glands got a good workout.
My cousin still lives there and says it's a great town.

you could try to figure out where they built the radio-cron radios but i imagine there no trace left there as they went out of business in the early 30s.butch

Re: Whats to do in Kansas city MO
I've always wanted to see the old Western Auto headquarters building, which is quite a landmark in KC. I wonder if all the antique malls and flea markets in the area are all full of Truetone radios? I've always wanted to go up there and find out.

Re: Whats to do in Kansas city MO
Lottsa good BBQs here. Arthur Bryants at 17th and brooklyn, the one with the pics of all the presidents hollywood types, on the wall, Gates at 12th and brooklyn, Smoke house at 63rd and North Oak, Wabash, with their big smokehouse out back, in Excelsior Springs, (out on the northeast fringe of KC but good food) RoseDales on southwest boulevard. There are more but I just can't think of them right now.
Most GOOD BBQs in KC aren't in the prettier hoods, but great places for lunch nontheless. If you need someone to get you to the food, I sent you a PM with the number, just call.
Mike
