Having started in the late 1960s, I have a nice little library, with a lot of service manuals; they include Rider's 1-5 abridged, 5-16, and 18. I also have the Philco 1928-37 and Zenith volume 1-3, some of the RCA red books, and a fairly good file of RCA theatre-sound info from 1934-59, as well as other assorted television, broadcast and theatre-sound manuals. I also have Sams from 1946-51, and most of their 1950s auto-radio manuals. I have the Beitmans manuals through 1946, and lots of textbooks, too; Tremaine's Audio Cyclopedia, the Radiotron Designer's handbook, Terman's Radio Engineering, several ARRL handbooks, the two Ghirardi books, his "troubleshooter's encyclopedia", and many, many more. Then there are some of the Mallory-Yaxley books, the Sams "red book" cross reference, and a big file of back issues of Popular Electronics, Electronics Illustrated, Radio-Electronics, and Popular Science.

Even with all that paper, I still find myself going out on the web in search of more information...

got books

Post by anachronist on Sun Nov 13, 2011 7:47 am

Among some that I'd have to dig out, I have at hand the following "Antiques":
Old Time Radios! Joseph J. Cary. A gift from a friend and the only one that's new. Good for Novices
The Radio Amateur's Handbook, 1965. Serves as a ready reference source regardless of its age (principles don't change)
Tube Substitution Handbook, H. Sams. Collector gave it to me
Elements of Television Systems, 1960, G. E. Anner
Television Servicing, 1950, Heller & Shulman
Radio Operator's License Manual,1951, J.F. Rider
Receiver Troubleshooting and Repair, 1960, Ghirardi and Johnson

Assorted Tube Manuals -- GE, RCA, Sylvania. Can't work without these

Been so long since I've looked at some of my collection, forgot I had them.

If I had to recommend one book to beginners it would bePractical Radio Servicing by Marcus and Levy, published in 1955. This volume is less well known than the same authors' Elements of Radio Servicing. It treats the servicing of AC-DC receivers painstakingly and thoroughly. If this volume is not in your service literature collection, try to obtain a copy. Indispensable.
