Will this Variable transformer work?

Post by turboomni on Mon Oct 04, 2010 10:11 pm

Hello ,I am new here and was delighted to see this forum.
Over the years I have collected tube radios and stereos. I have an old echophone radio from the 1930's and am reluctent to plug it in and fire her up. It has sat for manty years after a restoration.
My question is I was given a transformer I think like a variac. The label reads:

volt-slider
Yamabishi Electric type N-130-3.
Input 100v 50/60 hz
output 0-130v 2.3A
61-3780 300va

Will this be good enough to power up and old radio and stereo equipment?
Thanks

Welcome to the forums. In my opinion, this variable transformer isn't strong enough to handle anything, but, simple AC DC radios.
Are you sure input is 100 volts?
Our line voltage is 120. Our line voltage would over-drive it, and, may burn it out.....
You need a variac rated at at least 5A.
I would also reccommend against plugging anything in unless it has been gone over by a reputable tech, first.
We will be willing to help you learn electronics if you want to eventually take this on yourself. That's what it's all about.....
Again, welcome....

Bill is right. The one you have is to be used in Japan
They have 100 volts 50/60 hz standard. 120 volts might
Harm it. Is it fused if it is you could try it. 0-130 output might work. Rolling Eyes Very Happy

Thanks guys for the info. The unit does not have a fuse and I have never used it so I won't try it.
So if I plug this one into a variac at 100 volts it should work LOL!
Also thanks for the welcome too.
