Radio is really a Watterson, a Texas make from 1946,7. Look at Riders under models 4582 and 4782. They also explain the use of the old-new switch.

The switch acts to bypass resistor, R9 (3/4 ohm 1/4 watt)
in Old battery. So it bypasses the resistor when when the batteries are becoming depleted. The wire from the switch goes to ground directly when closed and bypasses the voltage dropping resistor. Otherwise when open (new) it goes through the resistor R9.

sorry for the misspelling . Thanks for the info makes sense. Was wondering how they worked when battery got low. Just bypasses the resistor.
Thanks again Denver.

Its nothing more than a simple regulator to keep the radio performing at a certain level despite battery voltage dropping.
