FILTER CHOKE

Checking resistance on filter choke getting 170 ohms resistance. Took wires loose so i wouldnt get false reading.

So is that a correct reading?
Is the filter choke an open wound coil, or with lamination's, or totally encased?

(suggestion as an experiment--NOTE I have never done this so be cautious)
You could check to find its impedance, by using
A variable resistor in series with the choke and 6 volt AC source. Read the voltage across the choke then read the voltage across the resistor. they should be the same.

If not then adjust the Pot till both read the same.

This will tell you what the impedance is in ohms, by reading the resistor value after the test.

It is totally encased . what else would make this radio blow electrolytic cap ?
Not good enough to try your method . Resistors check good no shorts anywhere. Rolling Eyes Idea

caps deteriorate with time and can open or short by them selves. The other possibility is the cap was installed backwards. (wrong polarity) Suspect

If you look at the schematic, you will not find that value???????
It looks to be about 3200 ohms not 180 Sounds like you may have a shorted field (choke)

Thanks for your help. Found a site you might want to take a look at www.tpub.com . The one in my radio call for 200omhs resistance 20%tolarance 180 should be good .
Was new caps right polarity. Any other thoughts why it would blow. Rolling Eyes
