CHRISTMAS STORY Empty CHRISTMAS STORY

Post by VANT on Thu Dec 24, 2009 9:47 am

I was shopping for last minute gifts last night at "Wally World" and came across a selection of portable boom boxes that would make a good gift. I was looking at the different brands and there were two brands that all of us would know from collecting vintage radios: RCA & EMERSON. Well being a collector and having a few Emerson radios in my collection I picked up that box to read what it had to offer. The price was right and it had all the features that I was looking for but to tell you the truth the main reason I decided on this one was the name Emerson. The vintage Emerson radios I have in my collection are some of the best sounding sets I own. I was just glad to see a brand name that I recognize and glad to see that one of these great old companies was still around making radios. I placed the box in my shopping cart with a smile on my face and walked to the check out counter. As I was waiting in line I decided to read more of the box and came across the "MADE IN CHINA" label. For some reason the smile went away and I got a little depressed!
Oh well... what are you going to do. I bet my Emerson radios at home sound and work better that than this thing ever will and I bet this thing will not be around 65 or 70 years either!

We make nothing here anymore.
Emerson was one of the first companies to sell out to the Japanese.
This country is in BIG trouble!!!

I hate to turn this post into a gripe session about what has happened to American industry but I saw a Zenith tv the other day and I doubt even that was made in America. I don't know if any of ya'll out there ever think of this but I sometimes sit in my "radio room" listening to some of these old radios and think of all these great companies on the front of them that are no longer with us.

p.s. I am sorry if I offended any of our Canadian members. We did this to ourselves.

Yes, indeed, it's sad. We need to wake up in this country.
I get the constant complaint: "If we make them they will be too expensive." What about the fact that the stuff we buy now often doesn't last a year, or, more, and, it is not repairable. We keep buying new ones from them, and, in the end, we would have been better off paying more for better quality American, or, Canadian goods.
Mexico, and, Germanny have also made some good things, as well.

I just think this is a sad ending to this great country.....

We also manufactured our own radios, tvs, cars, etc, etc, etc.

Then in 1975 an uninformed and mostly naive electorate chose to vote into Federal office the most socialist government this country has ever seen.

They proceeded to rip the heart out of our tariff system, allowing cheap and nasty crap from 3rd world countries to flow into Australia and effectively ending Australia's manufacturing base.

Our companies obviously couldn't compete with the rock bottom wages paid to the offshore workers and so in a very short time sold out to the foreign companies or simply went bust.

In short, our predicament is exactly the same as yours, with little chance of much changing in the near future.

Oh, and by the way, we also have a government subsidized health and welfare system, similar to what your boss is striving to introduce in your country, which was also introduced by the same socialist government at about the same time.

It ran smoothly for a few very short years but now I can tell you that overall it is an abject failure.

We have people waiting up to 96 hours on gurneys in public hospitals because of lack of staff and basic infrastructure.

We have people dying before they can be admitted to hospital because of the above problems.

We have nurses who, thanks to the above government, now have degrees.

This may sound great in theory but many of these nurses now will not pick up a bedpan because they see it as "beneath their standing" and so relatives of the sick are being asked to feed and bathe them IN THE HOSPITAL WARD!!!

This is our wonderful government subsidized health system at work.

I have witnessed this myself on more than one occasion, so don't think that for one minute that what is going to happen in the USA will be a universal panacea.

Australia used to be known as the lucky country.

Not any more.

Enough of my rant.....I'm going to crank up the BBQ, sip a few cold Victoria Bitters, forget about the woes of the world for a while and wait for the new year to come in, in about 7 hrs from now.

Happy new year.
