General Radio 1001-A

Post by ka3qlf on Mon Aug 21, 2017 9:25 pm

Hello everyone.  One item the club has is a General Radio 1001-A. While I haven't opened it up yet, all front knobs seem intact. I am seeking advice/suggestions on testing and verification that it works. Thanks!!

Pic available upon request, when I added it here, it cropped most of it out

I have had my General Radio 1001-A for some 35 years...

Here is what I have learned.

There are a couple of electrolytic capacitors that may need changing, yet, the ones in mine are still O.K.

Be sure the correct tubes are installed.

If the audio oscillator is not working change out the caps, use stable foil/poly caps.

Calibration is off on some bands can be brought in by the use of ferrite to load the offending coil.

There are "N" to "UHF" adapter connectors.

Some 1001a's were factory equipped with UHF connectors.

The RF connector is part of the sealed attenuator compartment. Tinkering inside to swap a connector may effect how the calibrated attenuator works.

The output is HUGE a 10-25' length of wire in the RF output can deliver a signal for at least a mile...

Audio input can achieve 90% or better modulation if a 6 to 10:1 audio interstage transformer is used.
