Truetone radio ID help needed

Post by lhlyda on Tue Mar 14, 2017 6:42 pm

Just bought this on auction, looked interesting. Posted a picture on another forum, and all Ive gotten so far.

About 39-40ish
Made by Detrola
Sold by Western Auto under Truetone brand

I havent received the radio yet, so I do not know tube compliment, but can see a rubber stamp on the lower bottom back chassis, that folks tell me will have a model number. ive been thru all the pictures on radio museum for truetone, western auto radios of that time frame. When I get it, in a couple of days, the mystery may be solved or deepen, lol

Id like to get ahead of the curve and do more research, I believe I can see a short wave band on the dial, even though it is cloudy/yellowed.

Any ideas guys what model this is?

Thanks!

It reminds me of the d709 but its not the one I have seen. It has 3 knobs while the d709 I have seen has 4. From nostalgia air it looks like the d709 may have been made over a few years with changes in design maybe. One thing I use to do years ago before the internet was to go into my riders and look at the truetone section of the manuals. When you get it you could look through the riders from 34 to 39 and see if you can match the tube and parts layout.

Thx Willy,

The radio should be here today and maybe the stamp on the back can be read and the mystery will be solved, but then again it may take a new turn, lol. One of the reasons I like this hobby. Ill keep everyone posted.

FYI, in case you are looking for more projects the Music City meet is coming up in April. If I am not mistaken you are over close to Dayton, I am about an hour from you in Smithville/McMinnville. The meet is a great place to go and meet other radio collectors and find parts. Here is the info and location if you are interested in going.

April 15, 2017 (Saturday) - Spring Swap Meet at Associated Builders & Contractors (1604 Elm Hill Pike, Nashville), doors open at 7 a.m., event starts at 8 a.m.

You are correct. I live in Spring City, I'll check and see if I can make it. I can always use another project lol

It's not as good as some I've seen, but it's a start and it's mostly legible:

Have a blow-up of the small schematic which is readable. PM me with your email address and I'll send it along
