My latest find A HIPPO

Post by Dan Walker on Wed Feb 22, 2017 10:52 pm

I bought this hippo for $20.00 a couple of days ago. I recapped it  and cleaned the cabinet and gave it a coat of Renaissance  wax.   These little radios have such a good sound, and really have a very different design.
Everything is original including the back, which I have never seen on any of them.
It is the best Hippo I have  and it's a keeper.

Nice set Dan. It looks good. Some of those little Philcos have pretty good performance. I didn't look up the schematic to see, is it a 5 or 6 tube set?

It is  five tube radio Model 75..  I guess  the model is 75 because it is Canadian.
SORRY,, It is a six tube radio.

My collector's guide shows it as a model 48-460, from 1948.

It really is beautiful.

I have several of these. They are great performers. I am yet to see one with an intact back though.

I picked up one with the coil for a magnet on the speaker. The speaker was shot and I was able to find the schematic for the model with a PM speaker. I converted it to that and it works fine. So if someone has a hippo with a bad speaker magnetic coil look through the riders for the PM version.

Very nice radio.
Most of their backs didn't survive.

The only non-wood radio and AC/DC radio I have in my limited collection. there is something really neat about them.
