Marconi model 85

Post by Dan Walker on Fri Jan 20, 2017 1:36 am

I just bought this one and am in the process of recapping it. I do like the cabinets on the Rogers and Marconi.
This cabinet will only need some cleaning up. I do have the piece of missing wood for the bottom. I have to remove the grill cloth and straighten it.
The glass is my main concern as it should be convex and it is over 9X6 inches. Flat glass might not work because the dial may rub on it.
I have looked into getting some special plastic the you can form in your oven ,after you make the right shaped mold.

Dan,

I really like the appearance of those also. I have a model 102 Marconi, very similar to your model 85. BTW, I found a place that sells oval, convex glass, and it is a LOT less than the $260 you were quoted. I'll send you a link by email.

cheers

It's kind of silly of me to email it when there might be others who could use the information....

Here's the one link I found : http://www.victorianframecompany.com/convex-glass/

here are some photos I took of the underside of the chassis.
I have it recapped now  and the amp works , but I don't get any stations yet. I will have to do some troubleshooting.
I have not checked the resistors yet and I think it might be part of the problem as some of the plate voltages are not right. For me it is all a learning process.

Have you replaced those paper capacitors, yet?
I can guarantee they are bad. Same with dog bone resistors.
And, surely you've already replaced the electrolytics?

Bill , I replaced all the capacitors  I just didn't take a photos of  it with them replaced. One dog bone resistor does not get warm at all,  so I am going to find the value and replace it  .

Well today I cleaned the tube sockets and poked around, but didn't find anything wrong with the wiring so I thought I would align it . After powering it up with the variac, I was receiving a station very weak.
Then I noticed that my variac was on 85 volts. After turning it to 110
It was working fine. Tomorrow I will run it , check the voltages and see if it is working OK. Next
I hope it was just dirty tube sockets.

I got it playing and then the dial string broke, so I had to take the front glass off , and while I had it off I decided to clean it .
It has three pieces of glass with different lettering on each one.
I never like cleaning the dial glass as many times the lettering will rub off.
NOT this time, I got lucky and I was careful .it turned out good and much clearer. Here are a couple of photos

marconi model 85 All Done

Post by Dan Walker on Fri Feb 03, 2017 7:34 pm

Today I finished this radio except the knobs. I will have to strip and lacquer them when it gets warmer.
 Everything went together as planned.
The eye tube I used  is one of those from Japan ?   They are on Ebay. it works very well and is very bright.

Now I have to find a place for the radio.
Here are the photos

Nice job Dan! I wish one of these would come available near me as i love the looks of the Marconi's and other canadian model's for that matter. Most american consoles are bland in comparison. Thanks for sharing this restoration with us.

Right now it is snowing and the temp is zero F . We are expecting about 2 inches of snow in the next two days, and the temp is supposed to go down a little.
I am used to the winter, as I go deer hunting every year., but that season is over.
Actually we have had a mild winter.
