Sylvania SY-247

Post by shunkpenn on Mon Oct 31, 2016 10:58 pm

Hello all.....why is it I can't find anything on this tube. I guess it's just a regular type 47. It's a beautiful big old globe tube...just found it in one of my boxes.

Those old getters sure blew a lot of metal around in there, didn't they? Nice tube and box. At least it gives a clue as to it's function.

This is a interesting little bugger as well....don't think there are too many of these around.  It was made specifically for this radio....almost looks like it could have been made by GE.

Re : the tube in the post directly above this one (not the 247)

That's an interesting tube. I did a bit of Googling for "Freshman Master B Eliminator" and came up with this :

https://books.google.ca/books?id=2CgDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA117&lpg=PA117&dq=%22freshman+master+b+eliminator%22&source=bl&ots=83bu4EYe6x&sig=SBsygRmqt6BDP8Xi--Yo_l1llRo&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiAt92YtIjQAhUX0IMKHSPwD_UQ6AEIITAB#v=onepage&q=%22freshman%20master%20b%20eliminator%22&f=false

And this, which appears to be your tube but from another builder :

You are welcome, but I would encourage you to keep an open mind that the tube may be something else completely different than what I have suggested. That is just what my first googling turned up.

cheers

John

John...I took a look at both links and I may not be convinced that this is exactly the same tube. The interesting thing is I can't find one pic online that looks like this tube. The RCA UX216B is not of the same construction....however I think this tube served the saved principle of the UX216B. Maybe this tube came out in the first year of production with the radios?

That brass based one looks like a gas filled rectifier used in early power supplies to eliminate having to use batteries. Majestic, and, some others made these power supplies. They made thee B voltage for the tubes on battery powered sets.
The one with the 247 on the base is actually the tube number. But, I thought it was a five pin tube. I could be wrong. But, a four pin tube would normally be two filament pins, a grid pin, and, a plate pin. No cathode.
It's fairly early. Possibly about 1924.
