Sony cassette tape deck TC-WE305

Post by Wildcat445 on Sun Aug 14, 2016 11:02 am

We had a discussion awhile back about replacing belts on tape decks. I have this tape deck which now needs belts on both sides. Have any of you replaced belts on a cassette deck? I see YouTube videos on other models, but not this specific model. Can you buy belts specifically for this tape deck or do I have to use a universal belt of some kind? I believe someone posted a website of a business that sold these belts, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks.

If the belt is hard to find I have has some degree of luck with belt cleaner. I think most go by the name of rejuvinator. I have used that and if its just slipping and the belt is not stretched it will usually work. I also clean the pulleys it goes on with alcohol.

Now that we can get belts, has anyone actually done the work? I tried it on a cheap Sharp deck and ended up tossing it. Is this a possible procedure or should I file 13 this thing as well?

The deck is worth saving, but, the rejuvenator is no good. At best, it's a temporary fix and, , not good. I'd recommend using the MCM belting.

Go ahead and try it. I use to work in a shop back in the 80s and we fixed them all the time. As far as the rejuvinator I use it if the belts are not available. If you can get your hands on some used by xerox its a lot better than the stuff you can find.

I believe I will try it sometime. (I am knee deep into processing 78's to digital). Just HOW does one do it? A, B, C, nuts and bolts. What to avoid, what to look for, that type of thing.

Do a search over at youtube for videos of replacing them. Not to bad depending on how its made. I did a search for a video and found a bunch of them. This fellow seems to have made a few.

I watched one on a Sony, but it was not my specific model. Do you know if all Sony decks are basically the same as far as how they are set up?

Its been so long since I have worked on many I don't remember. Seems like most of the time I would just loosen the bar or piece that holds the main wheel or wheels that the belt goes around. Sometimes they have a set screw that adjusts the flywheel and it sometimes has glue or something to hold it, I leave that piece intact . I just loosen the pieces so I can slip out the old belt and slide in the new one the best I remember. Between 8 tracks and cassettes I have maybe averaged one a year. But for the most part they are self explanatory . They remind me of of changing a belt on a riding mower , only smaller.

The cheapy Sharp I messed with came all apart on me. I did not see a practical way to get the tape mechanism out. There was a number of switches and doodads that got out of kilter and I could not get it back together. I'll dig a bit deeper into the Sony. There should be a logical order to how it was assembled.

Coming in way late on this thread but Tapeheads.Net is a good forum for any type of repair on cassette decks.
