Zenith 8 S 463

Post by Ed in W. PA on Sun Jun 05, 2016 2:36 pm

These are some before photos of my new project. A mouse ate through the wire on this Antenna Coil, and I had to make repairs on it.

Zenith 8 S 463

Post by Ed in W. PA on Sun Jun 05, 2016 11:06 pm

So far so good. When I removed this chassis from the cabinet the mouse nest under there was big enough to fill a hard hat. I am really lucky that the antenna coil was the only casualty. The only real problem I see right now is that I have no alignment instructions. I have a Riders manual on compact disc but it has only the schematic and nothing else. If I can't find the proper procedure anywhere I will just have to wing it and hope for the best. If any one knows of a source of this information I would appreciate your input. Regards, Ed.

Many times in Riders there will be "additional information" given in another spot, perhaps for more than one chassis model.

EDIT...........Ed, try Riders 11, Zenith Page 30.  There are alignment instructions for the 5808 chassis and others on that page.  Good luck.

Thanks, WC. It looks like 11-26 and 11-30 should work for me. Thanks again, Ed.

Zenith 8 S 463

Post by Ed in W. PA on Sun Jun 05, 2016 11:59 pm

Another question. it seems that someone went to the trouble to re-stuff a lot of these caps but did not replace any of the dogbone resistors. When I repaired the 6S 152 I found these to be anywhere between 50% to 100% out of spect. What is up with this? Thanks, Ed.

I have trouble reading the codes on dogbone resistors, so I follow the schematic and just routinely replace them all, every one I see. They are old enough by now that they have drifted wildly out of tolerance in many cases. I have been bitten in the butt by the weird problems that out-of-tolerance resistors can cause. The fortunate thing about old radios is that if I misread the schematic for some reason, the value of most resistors is not critical. I seldom re-stuff caps. The exception would be for certain can caps where space is limited. I'm not a fan of doing extra work just because "someone" has determined that it is the best thing. I have no quarrel with those who take the opposite view, however.

Here is an in-progress photo of the chassis of the radio I am working on.
Here is another cutie that I can't wait to tear in to.

A person does not get the opportunity to work on a really nice one like that one very often.

Zenith 8 S 463

Post by Ed in W. PA on Sun Jul 03, 2016 5:45 pm

This project has gone well so far. One problem I encountered was with the alignment. As found, I was getting 1410 KQV at approximately 1510 on the dial and a local station which broadcasts at 620 came in around 560, and radio 570 another local nowhere to be found. The alignment instructions included a step for the high end ( antenna trimmer ) but not for the padder which I found by tracing wires from the bandswitch to the trimmer cap called out in the parts list as the broadcast padder. Adjusting this brought the low end of the dial back and the rest of the alignment went normally with just little tweaks necessary. Unfortunately this set was supposed to be already restored, but I am sure the guy did his best. I will try to send pictures soon. Regards, Ed.

Zenith 8 S 463

Post by Ed in W. PA on Sun Jul 03, 2016 7:18 pm

Thanks, WC. I am ready to start the cabinet but must admit that I am a little apprehensive. This cabinet is dirty and has a few scratches but no chips or lifted veneer. I will clean it with GOJO as per the advice given by you and others and also plan to try a product called Trade Secret. Home Depot in my area doesn't carry it so I ordered it on line. I will post pictures when finished. It seems that the Wave-Magnet feature as well as the addition of a RF stage to this set makes it perform as well as the 6S152 does on my longwire antenna. Good stuff! Regards, Ed.

Try the GoJo first. That should allow you to better evaluate the finish, whether it is still usable or not. You'd be amazed at how much dirt you can get off doing that. Go easy with the steel wool at first until you get the hang of it. Cheese cloth and burlap work well, too. You'll have 'er shinin' in no time! Good luck.

Zenith must have sold a lot of those 8-S-463 consoles. I had 2 of them at on time. One I traded on another Zenith and one I sold at Estes vintage radio auction about 8-10 years ago.

Zenith 8 S 463

Post by Ed in W. PA on Fri Jul 15, 2016 11:45 pm

Oddly enough I purchased a similar set at a Estes Auction a few years back. Every year the radio club I belong to (Pittsburgh Antique Radio Society) sponsors an event called the Tri-State Radio Fest which includes an auction by Cledis Estes Auctions. This years auction which was held on April 17 included perhaps 100 different items ranging from tubes and miscellaneous parts, to many table radios, wooden and bakelite, to consoles including a 12 and 15 tube Zenith console. Naturally, we spent too much money. However, the prices at the auction were much better than what you could find on eBay, and even Craigslist. This is the only Estes Radio Auction that I know of, but would like to know if there are others around this area. Thanks- Ed
