Heathkit IO-12 scope probes

Post by Wildcat445 on Wed Apr 27, 2016 4:08 pm

I bought this nice old scope at an auction for $3 and I need probes for it. Is there any chance that a set for this thing still exists? Thanks.

Could you just make a new set? I have a old RCA scope I thought about restoring and making a set for it.

I'd considered that, Willy. There are five probes that came with it new. High voltage, RF, direct, X10 and another one I can't think of just now. The direct probe I could fudge, but the others?

How about this and an inexpensive Chinese BNC scope probe?

This scope uses banana plugs on its input. I would never have thought that new probes were available anywhere. Thanks, 75.

This little scope appears like it is in good shape, with a clean chassis and a nice metal cabinet. It is rather uncommon to find this kind of equipment this clean around here. It has ten tubes plus the CRT. I believe the plan is going to be a thorough recap before I fire it up to any great extent. It has two can filter caps and several black beauty-styled coupling caps as well. All the tubes are Mullard and appear original.

With that double plug adapter, you should be able to use a BNC type scope probe. I have a couple and they are pretty cheap. The BNC adapter should give you better flexibility with the scope.

Great idea, 75. There are guys on here who tinker with test equipment. Perhaps, together, we can raise this thing from the dead and put it to good use.

It's a valuable piece of test equipment. So many uses.

I have restored quite a few test pieces which include scopes. The ones I have restored are like radios, if someone hasn't been in it making a rats nest  most of the time all new caps gets it working again. The last one I rebuilt was this 40s waterman pocket scope. I was dreading it but it restored great and works great as well. It was mostly caps. I did have one issue but I got it going. Don't get scared off  due to it being a scope. That waterman was easier to restore than many of the radios I have rebuilt.

Nice little unit. It reminds me of the OS-8 scopes we trained with in the Army.

This scope may work fine as is. It is full of caps that look like black beauties, and that does not fill me with confidence that it will run reliably with those in place. I'd hate to fry a nice old piece of equipment doing something that I know to be unwise going in. All the tubes appear original and it looks like it does not have a lot of time on it. My old Tektronics 532 is always busted and is a bear to work with. It has 77 tubes plus the plug-ins. It works nicely when it works. I need to go thru it, but I need more experience with scopes before I mess with something that complex. I appreciate you guys having experience with scopes and will definitely call on you when I get into the project.

It always helps not to have to test the test equipment. Very Happy

You got that right. Very Happy

Tek scopes are alleged to have some type of whiz-bang solder or soldering techniques that make them "different" to service, I have been told. I need to figure out what this "different" procedure is and how to handle it. I used to have a guy named Marvin who was really good with Tek scopes. He loved them and was good with them. He is gone now, and at least my old Tek scope misses him.
