"Dead" cell phone zones

Post by Wildcat445 on Sat Dec 19, 2015 5:18 pm

I use my cell phone maybe a half dozen times a year, maybe. I like to use it when the frau and I are shopping. She can go her way, I'll go mine, then we can contact each other to meet up at the checkout stand. I have a Trac-Fone that is a little over a year old. Many times lately, I have noticed that I get the old "No Service" prompt when I am in certain stores. If I step outside the store, many times just barely outside, like less than a foot, I get five bars and the phone will work. I still can't call the wife inside the store though. Many stores have satellite-based RF inventory scanning systems. Do these systems have cellphone jamming capabilities, maybe to prevent hacking into their inventory system with a cell phone? The unintended consequence would be to prevent certain cellphones from working period. Does this make any sense at all?

Legally they can not jam a cell phone signal. It sounds like something may be amiss with your phone or their scanner. I have a track phone that I got around 2001. It works fine still.

It could be a conspiracy WC but I would suggest you may be a total metal building that does not receive well? I'm not even certain how they work in car but there is a lot of glass.

I appreciate your input on this. I know the manager of a local "big box" and I'm gonna ask him what his position on this would be.

Metal buildings were always a problem with reception. Even in radio days.

The cell phones are SHF units. They can be relied to do lousy in a metal building. If it does good in one, more likely than not the proprietor is using a local signal amplifier. Our authority uses them in the hard to get at locations in our system.
