Kiddie Records

Post by Wildcat445 on Sat Dec 12, 2015 3:10 pm

Bill Cahill and I have been having a discussion on Golden records on another thread.  In the interest of others chiming in, I found this information on Golden Records.  Typical of Wikipedia, I wonder if it is a complete accounting.  It does not mention Columbia Records or Mitch Miller.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Records

This is all I have been able to find on Golden Records.  Several famous recording artists appeared on kiddie records, both under their real names and under pseudonyms.  Most kids in the 1950's owned a fist full of Golden Records.

Disney records were mentioned in our discussion.  Here is what I found on Disney Records:

Then, finally, here is what I found on Columbia Records (perhaps a thread in itself!):

Perhaps this information will serve to enhance any discussion of kiddie records.

These lists are incomplete. First, they mention them using Columbia for recordings of Davey Crockett by Fess Parker in 1954. Never ran into that Columbia version, but, have it on RCA Victor children's series.
Next, they have an incomplete recording artists list. I have Disneyland records starring Jimmy from the Mickey Mouse Club, and, recordings by Annette Funecello.
Jimmy Dodd did a number of records on the Disney, Disnyland, and, Micky Mouse labels, which is a label that wikpidia doesn't mention in company names.

It is incomplete, but is a good place to start. I had forgotten about Fess Parker. The Sons of the Pioneers did some kiddie records, too. They might have been on RCA?

Just for fun and games, I went on Bing, and entered "childrens record discography". A number of discographies for different labels came up. I don't know if you have tried this venue, but you might find some new sources.

I'll give that a try. Thanks, 75.
