Your first car?

Post by jerryhawthorne on Thu Sep 24, 2015 6:08 pm

Seeing how there are so many car people here, just wondering what was the first car you bought. I will start.
My first car was a 1950 Ford Buisness Coupe. I added a three on the tree overdrive transmission. Took the car to TJ and had a rear seat added and white tuck and roll interior. No doubt it was stuffed with dry grass or something worse. Two 97 carbs, aluminum heads and Fenton cast iron exhaust manifold. The necessary chrome reverse rims (remember those?) with the little bolt on chrome knock offs. All chrome was redone including some added on the inside of the doors. Nice little car but back then (1964) when I bought it gas was cheap. Now that I think about it, the same as a pack of cigs. I guess that comparison hasn't changed much.
Just looking on google, I should have held on to that car. Hindsight is always better. I paid $250 for it, the same I paid for my wife's wedding ring a year later. If I would have held on to that car as long as I have held on to my wife (50 years) oh well, we won't go there. Tell us your stories.
Best, Jerry

1969 Ford Galaxie 500 2-door hardtop. Light Aqua, with a dark red interior. 429 Thunderjet, 4-barrel Motorcraft carb (iirc), dual exhaust. I was 17 and it was all I could do to find the $600 to buy it in 1975.

Looked much like this, but in a lighter blue and with stock rims. Photo courtesy Google image search ::

My first car was blue with a black vinyl top. A '73 Olds Omega like this one, but with stock exhaust. I traded a '73 Suzuki GT 550 in on it.

My first car was a 1964 Peugeot 404. Not the prettiest thing but was different from everybody else's ride. It was in great shape as it was previously owned by an elderly neighbor who bought it new. The best $50 I ever spent. Here's a picture I found on the net that is just like it in color and condition.

Smashed up when a US Marine wife turned left in front of me back in '74.

1976 Chevrolet Nova with a very heavily modified 305. My guardian angel (and everyone else) had a very tough time keeping up with me in that car. It was WAY too fast for a 16 year old!

Does it count if you never drove your first car?

Dang 75, I had to have my dad sign for our marriage license, I was only 20!
OK, now let's open this thread up a bit if it's alright with the Mods.
Question:  What was the most fun car you owned for just driving fun?
My answer, a 1970 911 E Targa.  Both my wife and myself drove it in many PCA events.  A tricky car to drive going on parking lot race with cones set up as it would move to oversteer and understeer in a heart beat but if you got it right between the brake and the throttle a real blast.  The wife seemed to love spinning it out.  Great out on the road like going up PCH in CA.  I won't say the most reliable but not bad.  It was really fun to drive.  The only car I have had than my body said no plowing around the curve but the car just said "give me more".  It made driving fun.

I don't enjoy racing nor speed contests much and my favorite vehicle is based solely on the amount of pleasure I got from just driving it. it wasn't a fast car by any stretch, but it was cheap to drive and was the most agile large car I owned. It was a 1981 Olds Toronado Diesel. I installed the radio and speakers and kept all the optional equipment operational in it. I had it between 1991 and 1996. The person I got it from had had a new engine put in and the car repainted. and it had a leather interior with power everything. Not too long after I was laid off work in Michigan, it fractured a head bolt and I couldn't afford to do anything with it. I sold it just before moving down here.

The first car I owned (before the Galaxie and before I had a drivers license) was a 1946 Plymouth 5-passenger coupe. I sold it.

The first car I drove legally was the Galaxie.

The car I should have kept (and traded the Galaxie for) was a 1969 Ford Mustang Grande with 59000 miles on it and no rust. I traded it for ::

The car I had the most fun with, a 1973 Cortina GT with the 2.0L DOHC, twin carb option. I think it was called the Lotus engine. It had been a Ford factory road rally team car and I got t from a retired team driver - it was awesome!

Picure this painted 1969 Ford Light Aqua (same as the Galaxie) with gloss white rims :

I have always been a Buick man. I don't ever remember not having one. I like driving the big V-8 powered Buicks. Smooth, quiet, powerful. I like the way they run, the way they look, the way they smell. The driver's door hinge should squeak, the e-brake levers should rub against the backing plate when the brakes are applied, and if it has a Dynaflow and torque tube drive, the e-brake cable should sing a song against the torque tube. Mine still impresses me 53 years after it was built. I have also never owned a car without power windows.

Re: First Car

First Car I bought was a 2 Door 64 Plymouth Fury (sport IIRC). Pushbutton Transmission, the Big 318, Power Steering.
It drove great, was quiet, I got around 20 MPG in town, 24 or so on the highway- not too bad for an 8 cylinder.

After a cocktail or 2, I sometimes lament letting go of some the great cars I have had over the years- this was one of the 3 or 4 I really regret selling.

My MIL had a '64 Comet four door sedan. Big V-8 cars back in the day got fairly decent gas mileage if you kept your foot out of the four barrel.

The first vehicle I owned was a 1986 Ford Escort. It had a 4 speed manual transmission. I only drove it once before it quit running. It had the 1.9 liter engine with a carburator and it had to have a push-pull choke cable on it. In order for it to run it had to be 3/4 of the way choked. I ended up selling it dirt cheap after that..
Now the first vehicle I actually drove was a 1991 Pontiac Transport. Yes, a Minivan. I bought it from a guy I knew well on payments for I want to say 200.00. It had well over 200,000 miles on it and a very slight lifter tick. It had a 3.1 liter V6 in it. I drove it for a few years with no major problems except the HP power steering hose sprug a leak, so I drove it without power steering. If I could find one today at a good price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

The first car I drove was my fathers '65 Pontiac Catalina. It was a plain jane vehicle, but it would definitely peg the needle at 120++.

The first car I bought with my own money was a 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 with a 351 4bbl Cleveland engine, and that thing would move. I owned it for about 3 years and stupidly sold it before moving to TX (in 1979) for the first time. Should have kept that one. (sigh) I just wasn't sure it would survive the 1000 mile journey from Knoxville.

So for that journey I bought a 1978 Honda Civic CVCC (manual transmission, no AC). Dumbest thing I ever did. I drove that car for 3 years and hated every mile in it. Hated it so much I never changed the oil and allowed the engine to seize up. In Houston that thing was a rolling sauna. Simply a miserable choice, and I never stopped regretting the sale of the Cougar.

A Cougar XR-7 was a nice car. That old Civic may have run almost as well with the engine seized as it did when it actually ran. Very Happy

Crazy, I went and drove a Cortina when they first came out. I couldn't afford one but what the hay? A real pocket rocket! The lowly Datsun 510 with a lot of upgrades was also one. They raced against Alfas and it was fun to watch at SCCA events.

Sounds nice, but, push button transmission sounds like a lot of trouble to keep working properly.
