Change In The Weather

Post by 75X11 on Tue Sep 15, 2015 6:11 pm

Just did my walk and it wasn't hot enough to melt out. It's supposed to top out at 80 today. Mr. cat is getting out closer to the alley to try to mentalize me into giving him an extra meal. He was disappointed in me. At least he wasn't panting like he had recently. No birds nor squirrels out yet. just a nice day.

The high humidity is pretty much done here as well. It was 78 here today with a nice breeze. You can feel Fall in the air. I ran over an armadillo this evening in front of the fire house. I have traps set for the one taking up residence under our deck. He will get a .22 caliber surprise if we catch him. The only good armadillo is a dead one.

They are making their way over here too. My sister thought the Texans were throwing them out of their vehicles because the meat went bad. Laughing

They are very destructive nuisance critters. My wife's deadly female cat won't even mess with one. There was one living in the neighbor's culvert. He got the bright idea of shooting the thing while it was still inside. Now he has the stinkiest culvert in the county. How do you drag a dead armadillo out of a 24' culvert? The buzzards won't even eat the things. I hit one with a shovel one time and knocked him for a loop. He got up and ran away. I hit the one tonight with my Pontiac, dead under the wheels. I got him, but I had to run over him twice. A loaded dump truck or a loaded rifle is the preferred method around here.

I caught a young possum in my critter trap last night. Norm the Armadillo Cowboy gave him the 22 caliber cure. It was one of a family living in a culvert down the road from me. The people who live there are elderly and can't get them. I hope this is not a trend. Those things cause as much damage as an armadillo. I put grub killer on my lawn in hopes of not attracting armadillos. They eat the grubs in the ground, and digging for them is what tears up my lawn.

I understand they attract the moles as well. If You get an armadillo, you oughta try making one of those fancy baskets they make out of the shell and tail.

While I attended electronics school at Ft. Sill, OK, we would periodically have inspections. One day while waiting for an inspection formation in our summer class A uniforms, one soldier saw a armadillo wandering around a graveyard adjacent to the barracks. He decided to go over and get it. he caught up to it and picked it up by it's tail and held it's tail with both hands with the animals' rear end level with and facing his adams apple, while he ran back to us. That must've loosened him up because that little fellow voided itself all over the front of that poor fools' uniform. I think that is where they got that term "Meaner than cat dirt" from. Tear gas has got nothing on that stuff.

When did you attend Electronics School at Ft. Sill? I taught a field radio mechanic class out there in 1971.

I was there in 1974. I graduated a few days after Charles Lindbergh died. 31B20 was my first MOS, the next was 26V20.

31B20 is what I taught.  Very Happy

I was not there in 1974.   BTW.....I loved the area.  I'm sure you enjoyed Lake Elmer Thomas.

It gave me a good start, along with 3 years practical experience. LETRA was a great place to unwind!

It has rained steady here the last 4 or 5 days. Went out for my walk and the trees out back at work were all cut up and the branches strewn all about. Mr. cat wouldn't even come out. I put his supper out and he apparently got it. Couldn't walk much as I have a new support on my tendon and it was too wet. It's supposed to rain til this weekend.

We could use a shower here. The grass is all dry and brown typical of early August. I have mowed my last for the season. I have everything put away and serviced for next year.

I'm not home, I'm at the OBX. The guy who works for me had to turn on the sump pump at my farm house. I may have to leave my vacation and go home early to deal with all the rain we are getting.

I saw on TV that you guys on the east coast were getting a shower. I hope all works out okay with that. It finally rained here for about five minutes last evening. It rained hard, but not for long.

The sun finally came out today. then I guess it's back to rain for another 4 days, I guess.. the weather forecasters are doing their best work in reporting what we have now, or earlier in the day.
