Zenith 5Z05 AA5

Post by Guest on Sun Aug 23, 2015 4:04 pm

I need to replace the filter caps in a Zenith 5Z05  AA5, it has a 2 section 60/20mfd @150WV.   I can't find a suitable replacement for the 60 and I'm planning on using 2 33mfd caps in parallel for the 60mfd.  Does anyone else do this and what is the success?

If You have room Mez, should work just fine.

Or you could go to Mouser's website (good luck with that) and get some of those skinny caps like I used in my Concert Grand project. They are radials and you can easily re-stuff the can with them. I would use a 68uf and a 33uf, but that is just a suggestion. Good luck.

I might go to Mouser for a couple of the 68mfd's to have them on hand.  I will have plenty of room under chassis as there is no can on this radio.  I'm going to have to make a tie point as this filter cap had long leads across the radio.

Thank for the feedback! Very Happy

I really do like the skinny Nichicons that Mouser has for restuffing cans. Their website is impossible for me to navigate for some reason. Many Zenith AA5's don't have enough room under the chassis to mount caps. Do you have a terminal strip you could use for a tie point?

Don't feel bad, I hate to navigate their website and I believe it's costing them some business. I do have a terminal strip and will mount it where the cap strap was.

Tis interesting, seems most Zenith stuff used 80 uf /40 uf

I know, this looked like a replacement so I checked the schematic and it showed 60/20.

BTW.....thanks for the Mouser link.  Very Happy

Dr. Radio I meant to quote your post as you can see, but I did an edit by accident, how embarrassing. Embarassed

Could you please repost your Mouser links and forgive me. Embarassed

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's done that. Very Happy

It is easy to do for some reason.

I love Mouser but can never find anything I need. It is all there if you know how to use the filters. I have bookmarked their location for Dale resistors that I need now and then. Other than those, I have found other sites much more convenient for ordering caps/resistors etc. They may a few cents more but lower my stress in searching! Very Happy

I have no idea who thought that the complicated setup to Mouser's website was a good idea. I have to use a surrogate when I buy something from them. I have complained, but I did not get a response. Apparently nobody at Mouser is concerned.

Mouser is not a very hobbyist friendly. I was going to order something from them, but that web site IS hard to use. It's geared more for the industrial buyer or engineer.

Larry,

Did you send me a Private Message? My e-mail says I got one, but when I logged in, none to be found. Embarassed

Anyhoo, I'm not mad at all. Accidents happen. Just didn't have time to repost. Rolling Eyes

For 60/20, use 56 uF and a 22uF. Those are the closest "modern" values.

The best I can tell, these are the original numbers I had.

Mouser Part #'s:

647-UCS2E560MND9

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Nichicon/UCS2E560MND9/?qs=%2fha2pyFaduhrj34crYw1xPeu3AuzSyf79fhoF1JhrRfZWwuGgum%252bZw%3d%3d

647-UVR2C220MPD

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Nichicon/UVR2C220MPD/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtZ1n0r9vR22XqtLh5sbTzGMGZDgvIA3II%3d

These are mixed and matched styles based on availability and ratings.

I only use Nichicon and Panasonic brand electrolytics. I feel they are superior to other manufacturers based on 20+ years of resto work.

Now, please, lets not get into to the Mouser bashing again. I feel they are better suited to the hobbyist then any other supplier. How many other MAJOR suppliers will gladly sell you one part with no minimum order? How many MAJOR suppliers have an online website, a LARGE printed catalog and an actual English speaking person on the phone to take orders?
