Not another tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Bill Cahill on Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:48 am

Well, the crack in my brain finally split wide open........
There it was on ebay. A somewhat sick looking '50's Admiral 17" metal case portable tv. Red, and, white.
The top of the case, and, one side are pretty rusty. It's complete with knobs. The guy plugged it in, and, half the screen actually lit up with snow in raster. I couldn't help it. I felt sorry for it, and, made a lower counter offer on it expecting not to hear from him. The next day he accepted my offer, and, boom! I'm the new owner.
It should be arriving by priority mail any day now..
Wish me luck.

Sometimes you just can't resist! Very Happy

After I get my CG done, the next major project for me will be a TV. Something simple to start. My ultimate would be a Magnavox all-tube rectangular CRT set from the late 1960's. Rare as hen's teeth, though. Maybe they were all junk?

You are the TV guru, so you should have your new Admiral up and running pretty quick. Please don't be stingy with pictures. I don't understand all I know about TV yet. Good luck.

Magnavox TV's were o.k., but, hard to find. My favorite was a 21" rectangular console on legs. Chinsy cabinet. All controls on top. Transformer operated. Vertiocally mounted chassis. The tube was a winner in this set. In good shape, these sets have a beautiful blue and, black picture due to the high quality picture tube.
All I presently own is a 1947 three way combination that shows a whopping 12" picture!!!!

It looks like some caps and tinkering should fix it right up. Don't forget to post lots of pictures.

Set arrived this afternoon. Seems to be alright. One control on top acts like it's bad. A lot of rust.. I think they were crazy to plug it in..... It's only a 14" Shoot.....

RCA made on something like that. I never did figure out how you get to the bottom of the chassis. The CRT sticks thru the chassis. Maybe the cabinet comes apart? The Admiral must be something similar as far as servicing goes.

You are talking about RCA's 8" Portable. The entire tv slips out of the front of the cabinet. There are two vertically mounted chassis', each containing tubes. Hard to get at inside chassis. It's a bear to rebuild. You absolutely have to remove the yoke, and, all out of the metal shield surrounding picture tube neck, and, remove picture tube with front bezel. It's got their lowest grade tuner ever, with a single 6U8 as oscillator, and, RF amp. Only two video I F tubes, no audio pre amp, only an audio output. Uses a 1V2 high voltage rectifier. Flyback is very small. I think it only puts out 8 thousand volts, though the set is amazingly bright. Transformer operated driving a selenium rectifier, and, the filaments of tubes.
Three inch square speaker. I have to finnish mine, one of these days.
First time I tried bringing it up something on the neck of picture tube started arcing. I think I've fixed that, but, it's still in pieces. I have an hv issue. Someone had the hv lead next to the 6DQ6 horizontal output, and, it burned the wire. That's not good...
That set is a real bear to work on, though the nuts out there really like it because it's so compact.
Reception, at best, is fair.

I'm sure the Admiral is series string, and, will have me blessing that set, if you know what I mean......

They made a bigger one, too, like 14", IIRC. The cabinet was on chrome runners and it had a handle on top, which was typically found broken. Again, IIRC, it had the controls on the side. 5U4 rectifier. I am looking for one of those. They look like a bear to work on, like the 8" you have. Although above my pay grade currently, I like the looks of them.

I have a sad one. I have a 21" "Portable" RCA on its' original stand. It's a 90 degree tube, and, it's a dud. Transformer operated, and, uses a 5U4. I'd like to get a good tube for that set, and, rebuild it.

I know it'll look good all spruced and painted up with Perry Masons' grim visage peering from the screen!
