Today's trivia question

Post by Wildcat445 on Fri Jun 26, 2015 11:43 am

You know me, MR Trivia Buff. The FM station the frau listens to has a trivia question every morning. I frequently win the "prize", a free whatever at Sonic, a certificate for something I can't use, that sort of thing. Today's trivia question has me scratching my head. I'm sure one of you can help me out.

They were talking about cartoon characters of the 1950's and '60's. They mentioned Tom Terrific and his sidekick, Manfred The Wonder Dog. Augie Doggy and Doggy Daddy. Quick Draw McGraw and Bobba-Louie. Then they asked, as the trivia question, the name of the sidekick for Touche Turtle. I remember a big, dumb looking dog with a feather in his headband. I told the wife to guess "Chumley", but she thinks that is not right.

So, what was the name of Touche Turtle's sidekick?

The answer. (Drum roll, please.) Dum Dum. I would have been wrong. Bummer.

I would have no clue. The only cartoons I usually watch from that era are Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry.

Touche Turtle was a Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the early 1960's or so. Touche Turtle was a turtle who walked on his back legs, carried a sword, and fought the bad guys. Dum Dum was a St.Bernard-type dog with a large feather in his headband. This cartoon was on Saturday mornings like dozens of others. I had rather forgotten about this character until the guys on the radio show mentioned it.

Sorry WC no answer but thanks for giving one. The early 60s I was graduating from High School and cartoons were not something I was watching. Mostly the girls at school and thinking about should I go to college and understanding girls!

Late comer. I too remember the appearance of the character. They must have had a creative lapse when selecting his name.

I figured this would get your attention, 75.  Now for another question that I'm sure you can answer.

Who was the sidekick of Tennessee Tuxedo?  I honestly don't remember.

Edit.....My wife informed me that Tennessee Tuxedo's sidekick was a walrus with a lisp, but she does not remember his name.

Edit again......Don Adams was the voice of Tennessee Tuxedo. I know the name of his sidekick. Chumley. I knew I heard Chumley somewhere.

I remember Good King Leonardo of Bongo Congo. What was his sidekick's name? (he was a skunk) Oh, and what were the names of the kid and dog that appeared in the Clutch Cargo cartoons? So there.

I have a trivia question for you. On the little rascals was Buckwheat a boy or girl or both?

Both Buckwheat, and, Ferina were boys, I believe.
Could be wrong about Ferina, though.
I sure miss the Little Rascals. The Our Gang's weren't quite as good.

I always liked Stymie.  He knew his lines and cues better than the other kids and did well in other feature films he appeared in.

75x11 got really close to the answer. The character Buckwheat was both a boy and a girl. There were at least 3 Buckwheats. There real names were  William Thomas Jr.Who was the boy most people remember. The girls Willie Mae Taylor , Carlena Beard. Willie Mae Taylor played in two of them as Marmalade and Buckwheat. Carlena was Stymies, Matthew Beards sister in real life. She also played the character called Marmalarde as well. She was only in just a few, less than 5. I have seen her in one of the shorts where they call her buckwheat. Here is one she is in. You can see her in it but I don't remember if they called her Buckwheat in this short.

Here is another one with Willie Mae Taylor as Buckwheat. About 8 minutes in you see Styme call her Buckwheat.

Jackie Cooper played on the Little Rascals/Our Gang for a time, but I'm not sure if early or late in the series. You guys sure are up on your Little Rascals trivia. I did not know that Buckwheat was ever played by a girl.

Jackie Cooper was in the our gang episodes. To me there are three time periods. The silent ones of our gang, the talkies our gang and the little rascals. The ones Cooper played in was the talkie our gangs. He may have been in the silent , I don't know off hand. I use to watch them as a kid and really like them. My wife and I bought most of them on tapes or DVDs. I love them. Clean and funny shows.

I have two most favorite ones. One is where "Uncle George" comes to live with the fam... "Umm, Yum, yum.. Eat 'em up!"
And antother one is from one of the earlier films where the little rascals take a scary ride in a haunted tunnel at the fair. You should see this. Then, I also like all three films about the new teacher Miss Crabtree.

It's remarkable how they were able to turn out such a good product that can evoke as many laughs in 2015 as 1930. They used each aspect of the medium, from sight gags to funny dialogue, to every nuance the actors could bring to bear. their sight gags were straight out of the comic strips, their dialogue became timeless catchphrases.
