Not sure lid is original, though. The grain doesn't look right..

Bill you are as bad as I am, buying something with missing parts. Seriously though it looks to be a good buy , what is there looks to be in great shape. Do you have those parts or are they easy to get? I know nothing of the early non electric players.

This machine being a factory combination 2, and, 4 minuite built in 1908, uses two reproducers. C for 2 min., and, H for 4 min. Though pricey now, they are still plentiful. The horn will cost. I have a reproduction crane for the horn. I can find an original Edison crank for it without much difficulty. I have an original new old stock carriage brush I'll put on it to dust the records while it's playing. I have two on two other machines, and, my Standard I rescued has one original rusty brush on it.
The hardest part will be coming up with the money to buy the parts. It won't be a quick project, but, certainly an enjoyable one.

Edison player

Post by curbsidefinds on Fri May 15, 2015 12:23 am

I've got one just like that. On mine, the grain on the lid runs across the top (from one lower edge to the other). It's possible that the veneer on yours was damaged and somebody removed the first layer and refinished the second.

Mine was in rough exterior shape when I got it because it had been stored in an outbuilding. (In fact it must have gone through the fire that destroyed the family home that had been on the site). It was all intact, so I sanded, stained, and varnished it. It ended up looking much closer to original that I had expected. The cool thing is that it was a gift from an elderly neighbor when I was a kid. He was a disabled man (tertiary syphillis) who lived alone in a tiny trailer nearby. It was an old travel trailer from the 40s. It was where the burned house had been. He had a couple dogs, one elderly Dalmatian and one three-legged Great Dane (fourth leg lost to cancer). He limped around with a cane and was regarded as a local eccentric outcast. My parents taught us to be kind to everybody, so we were kind to Virgil. He spoke with a bit of difficulty but we were patient and listened. He was grateful and eventually gave us little gifts from his stash of stuff from better days--a bronze boat hook end, an aircraft compass, a billy club, and then the Edison cylinder player. I've got all of them still and they remind me of Virgil.

Mine has the 2-minute reproducer and I've been to cheap to buy a 4-minute one so far. It came without a horn, so I found one for it.

It's interesting to wonder whether our current technology will function a hundred or so years from now, as the old Edison player does.

Hi, Chris. No. I doubt very much that our present technology will still be working even twenty five years from now. No quality. Designed to fail.
I'd love to see pictures of your phonograph. And, in the clubhouse, why don't you do a post with pictures of the rest of your stash. I know I'd be interested.....

I love to post pics but get a bit perplexed by the downsizing process. One of the evenings when it's raining (hey, this is almost summer in Michigan, the days are long, and we frolic outside while we can!) I'll see if I can do it. The last time I tried the blood pressure went up and the patience went down.

The Edison Home is my oldest phonograph, followed by a big mahogany Sonora with a lacquered-brass European mechanism hidden in the console, a table-top Victor, and the innards of an Edison disc player that somebody--of course--converted to a bar or cabinet. Then we move into the electronic era with a Victor RE-45 and then into newer devices. My radios begin with a Crosley VI regenerative set.

The hosting facility on this site will automatically downsize your pictures. It takes a minute or two after you hit upload. It' done when the url's appear.

In the interest of getting lots of pictures, if you continue to have problems loading pictures, you could email them to someone and we could post them for you. Just a thought if it would help.

Looked at shipping status on ebay. It arrived in Jacksonville yesterday afternoon. I don't know why there. That's over 250 miles South of me.. It doesn't appear to have gone any farther since. My guess is it will be delivered on Thursday. And, they call this expedited???

Re: I won a new toy!!

It came!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It arrived safely.. It was over packed....
The lid is a mess. The motor is very quiet. Something is wrong with one of the bearings, and, or, mandrel shaft. A lot of slop, and, a loud clacking sound. The good news is pin striping is mint. Has one hundred percent of it. Cabinet is much darker than the pictures look.
With some work, it's going to be a very nice machine.....

Both good, and, bad news.. Main case looks better than it does in photos. Motor is very quiet.. Pin striping is nearly like new......
Bed plate cleaned up well.

Bad. Half nut is shot.
When they replaced the bad pot metal bearing they did several things wrong. First, they marred plating on mandrel with their clamps, and, bent it some. Next, they slightly bent the shaft. Next, they apparently tried a hack saw, and, cut a big groove in mandrel shaft, and, put spurs in it. I got some of the worst spurs out. I also see they used thirty weight motor oil, not good, and, axle grease to lubricate it. I had to clean off all that gummy stuff. It lacks power, and, just makes it through a four minuite record. Spring may be weak. I don't like the amount of mandrel slop in the new bearing,, either. They may have filed inside of bearing. I think I'll replace it along with the half nut.

In spite of these problems, I think it will be a nice machine... I like the condition of the bed plate....
Motor has very little governor noise....

Sounds like you have it's measure. Could you get some pics of the problem areas for the benefit of those who should see such things in the future?

I'll see what I can do, but, it won't be today. I have too much going on. In spite of these problems, I believe it's very repairable.

I've come to the conclusion I may have to replace almost everything on top. Mandrel, and, shaft are damaged, half nut is shot, Bronze bearing is very sloppy, I think he reamed the hole, it's a mess.... I intend to fix it, but, this is going to be a long, expensive project..........
