A Difficult Weekend

Post by 75X11 on Sun Mar 22, 2015 8:11 pm

My smart phone failed Friday and I, after considering the options, went to get another at my provider. Then if I can get the other fixed (it's deader than John Browns' body) Very Happy I'll sell it.

Is there a market for broken smart phones?  Very Happy

A manager where I work has some kind of phone you can ask a question and it will talk to you! I told my wife about this and she wondered what I was actually doing at work. Very Happy

I've looked online and there are places that will buy parts units. I Hope it doesn't come to that. The unit I have is essentially a phone, laptop, 14mp camera, a text or speech translator, a navigation unit and many other things and has a footprint about as long as a dollar bill, is a half inch wider and is about a 1/4 inch thick. This one will even let me ust the circle critters on the reply window. Smile

You haven't had that very long, IIRC. Are they considered unreliable long term?

Not that I know of. They are a pretty desirable phone. (Samsung Galaxy S4) I'll have to see how much is the matter with it. If it can be repaired reasonably, I'd have no problem selling it.

There is a huge market for broken and bad ESN phones. eBay is the best place to sell either type of phone. Sometimes a broken or bad ESN phone can bring upwards of a couple hundred dollars. Even water damaged phones will sell fairly well. Sometimes they may even bring as much if not more than a good used one. An S4 should be able to bring around 150.00 to 200.00 as long as the LCD and digitizer are both good. I know that may sound crazy to some who are not familiar with smart phones, but something like the S4 retails for about 500.00 without signing a new contract or using an upgrade. Any smartphone should last 5-10 years as long as they do not malfunction or are not dropped. Of course most people do not keep a phone longer than 2-3 years now and most lose their value after 5 years.

Thanks, I am not up to speed on salvage prices. I intend to keep this one as long as I can. I keep it in an Otterbox Defender, which my youngest niece gave me.

Well, those numbers are not exact but should be in the ballpark though. I'm sure you know how eBay can be sometimes. That is one of the best cases you can have on a phone. The next best is a Life proof case. They are similar to an Otterbox but provide water and dust protection. They say they are waterproof, but I doubt that. I would look at them more like water resistant.
