Looking at the communications gear that is being discussed in the shortwave forum got me thinking about when I used to operate HF/SSB and microwave equipment for our rich uncle in the late '70s.  We worked 12 hour shifts 3 days a week, being expected to answer radio checks at least once each hour, with background noise being so bad sometimes that I would have to put on sound protection muffs and turn the radios up sky high to hear any traffic.  The folks in charge was always insistent that all traffic be received and confirmed and the microwave equipment was all tube circuitry with multiple oscillator stages to bring the signal up to nearly what a cheap cell phone will now produce.  Most of our sites were located in the middle of nowhere and checking satellite views, at least my site and our headquarters site is gone.
