My family is going to share a recording of my grandpa reading the Christmas story from Luke in the Bible. Recorded on Christmas Eve, 1964. He was the same age when this was recorded as I am now, 64. Then his mother, who would have been 146 years old on January 18 next will offer one of her famous blessings for the meal, recorded that same evening. I promised my grandpa that night that I would play the tape in 50 years.

Maybe a few greenbacks. If I do, then maybe I can get an inexpensive radio or phone. I wouldn't mind having a nice AM/FM battery radio with tubes in it or an inexpensive rotatory phone, possibly an AE 80 or similar . If it's not either of those maybe just caps for my newest radio.

When I was a kid, I wanted to have a phone in my room. I ordered a AE phone from Burden Sales in Nebraska. They had NOS AE 40 (I think) phones really cheap. I got and hooked it into our home wiring. The phone company sent a lineman twice to disconnect it. Worked good while it was hooked up, though.

The AE 40's are nice phones, just a little up there in price. The phone company obviously did not like someone having multiple phones or the fact that someone messed with their wiring. All those old phones are good quality compared to phones made in the past 25 years.

Try compared to what they've made in the last 35 years...
Most of my phones are very old dial phones, and, yes, they are connected...

My installation was before Bell Telephone started allowing individuals to lay in their own phones. We were leasing 1 phone with 1 service. They would detect any other phones on the line and pay a service call.

They used to do a ringer test and could tell the number of phones by current draw. When people started disconnecting the ringers on extra phones they went to a capacitance test to catch the additional phones.

Well I developed an itch and just scratched it. I found a AE40 on Ebay. I always preferred them to the WE desk sets. I hope it doesn't have a odd frequency ringer.

Perhaps a lump of coal. Actually blessed and there is not a thing I desire other than good continuing health for myself and my loving wife of almost 50 years.

The card I got for my big sister shows a snowman pouring 2 lumps of coal from his stocking. On the inside it shows him putting them on his upper face shouting " Ican see! I can see!".

Re: What Is Santa Bringing You This Christmas?

The gift the frau and I got each other this year was to have the house painted.  We put a bow on the garage door.  The frau is used to practical gifts from me.  One year, I got her valve covers for her Corvette.  Another year, I got her all new suspension bushings.  One year, she got a chrome Mixmaster.  She still uses it.  1968, IIRC.  I went whole hog and got both sets of bowls, the juicer, the thingy for stirring bread dough.  I think it cost something like $65 back then with all those attachments.

This year, we are going to enjoy Christmas music, on LP's, played on our Magnavox Imperial.  No CD's on Christmas Eve.  The frau dug out her mom's old Christmas ornaments.  We even have some of those bubblers that go in the tree light sockets.  We are going to eat on the frau's grandmother's china.  With my grandma's silver silverware.  The family members in attendance are going to bring items of their family to join in the festivities.  Our neighbors next door are coming this year and they are Hispanic.  So we are having Mexican chow.  Along with a standing rib roast, pork, sour kraut and dumplings and all our family's traditional fare. We will listen to Lawrence Welk and Andy Williams Christmas records while munching on homemade tamales.  I'm sure my grandparents never ate a bite of Mexican food in their lives.  The traditions of several cultures shared.

We adopted a family for Christmas for almost 30 years.  Last year, all the "needy" families had more than I did, so we are spending the money we spent on adopting a family on ourselves this year.  It seems the benefited should be more needy than the benefactor, to my way of thinking.

I have all my Grandmothers ornaments and bubble lights. For years I put up a 1950's Christmas tree complete with tinsel. I have suspended that for a few years while the grandchildren grow up.

Sounds like a nice Christmas WC. Very Happy

I sent a copy of that recording to my cousins in Indiana and my brother. My cousin borrowed a team of horses, and he and his three sons, their wives and kids, went into the woods to cut their Christmas tree with a sled pulled by horses. They cut down the tree with a crosscut saw just like grandpa used to do when we were kids. Grandpa pulled the sled with a pair of Percheron mares. They are taking videos of their activities and we ours, and will meld this 50th year celebration for the grandkids to carry on. We are gonna add our voices and comments to the originals. My cousin is taking still pictures, adding the video and the audio and will make DVD's for the family to share. Wonder if the grandkids will do this in 50 years? This thing got bigger as it went along. All I set out to do was to share this old forgotten recording with family.
