When I was young I studied and still play saxaphone. Glenn Miller's "In The Mood" was my favorite piece to play. We always played Glenn Miller selections during half time at our school football games. We had a very dedicated music teacher and our high school marching band/orchestra was the one everyone wanted to listen to. Even though Glenn played trombone, it was the way he used saxaphones that made his special sound.

I read George T. Simons' biography of Miller and he said that most of the band members dismissed the tune as a silly novelty number. Most were mighty glad that they were wrong, but got quite tired of playing it over and over.

One other thing about Miller that not too many people knew was that the only 'vacations' he took between when his band caught on in 1938 and his death were hospitalizations for exhaustion. An A+ personality.

Still quite a bit of conspiracy theories out there about his death.

He will be forever immortalized by his "sound" that can arguably be defined as the "soundtrack of war years".

The RCA album set of his AAF recordings have been issued on CD. It is a great set.
