It's Getting Cold Out

Post by 75X11 on Fri Nov 14, 2014 7:38 pm

I just looked at weather underground to see what the temperature and it says it is 74 degrees out. That thermometer or reader has too much alcohol in it! Actually it is 38. I saw about 8 robins outside trying to snap up the last things that will show their heads on a day like today. They look like they are about topped off for their trip south.

It was cool here. It made the news. High today was only 72. Lots of the women who came into the store had their boots on with their pants legs stuffed down into them. That was the older women. The young women were wearing shorts and flip flops. Only in Arizona. Those robins better have their long underwear on, or fly to Arizona. Rolling Eyes

You could tell they were feeling it. Poor old mr. cat couldn't stay after dinner to watch me walk and I failed to do it all. I guess i'm going to make it up tomorrow getting the leaves and burning the needles.

It's so cold that the thugs are pulling their pants UP.

You know it's cold when you see a politician with his hands in his OWN pockets.

Right now it's about 25*F outside and lightly snowing.

I've got the heat turned up and listing to 40s on 4 (SiriusXM) being received on my RCA Victor 17K console.

Yesterday's low was about 6.

Maybe Wildcat has a spare bedroom or guesthouse in his backyard? Very Happy

It's creeping up to 40.  I'll then start doing the leaves. Ugh!

Well, Doc, actually, I have both a spare room and there's a house for sale just down the street that I tried to peddle to 75.  The thermometer says 78 right now.  We could pitch a tent in the backyard in a pinch.

I did not realize that it gets that cold in Georgia. Ain't you guys still next door to Florida?

High of 65, low of 35, it is getting near time to winterize the yard drip system for the freeze. Not all of Arizona stays quite as toasty as where WC lives in the winter. The flip side is we don't roast quite as bad in the summer!

Sedona is one of the most beautiful places on earth. No doubt about that. I go to Missouri in the summer, so I can eat bugs and sweat. What is that old saying, "nobody rides for free?"

We do get a "taste" of snow up here.  Once or twice a year.  This is shot off our deck two years ago.

Snow on the red rocks. We do not have "snow" in the Valley, since it never officially snows in the Valley. It is called "grapple". This is a catch-all word for any kind of frozen precipitation. We can't have what doesn't exist, now, can we? Rolling Eyes

Two years ago, the wife got caught in "grapple" in downtown Phoenix. Traffic was paralyzed, and tow trucks were making a killing. Just enough accumulation to barely stick to cars was all it was. I go to great lengths to avoid any experience with the dreaded "s" word! Very Happy

That picture would make a great Christmas card, Jerry.

I got the pine needles burned. My face looks like and I feel like I've been bobbing for french fries in the fryer.

If you bring water with you, you could live pretty cheaply here. We live in AZ all winter for what propane costs us back home. Now which would I really rather spend money on? We don't have natural gas available, so propane companies are free to get together and gouge the consumer.

Ya know what is worse then the cold? Cold and no hot water.

Tomorrow I get the satisfaction of helping my plumber replace my water heater that decided to start peeing all over the floor. I can't complain about its age, it was newly installed by the previous owners in 1995.

What I will complain about is the fact we have to do the "water heater shuffle" on a blustery day, forecasted hi is supposed to be around 18*F Sad Sad

Same thing happened with the furnace a few years ago. Removal and replacement on the coldest day of the year. Sad

The oddest thing I noticed when I moved to Phoenix 30 years ago, was that lots of washers and water heaters were on a slab in back of homes. OUTDOORS! The water supply for this house is still all outside. I have insulated mine, but most are just bare copper pipe.

There is never a good time to replace a water heater. That is just a sloppy, messy, heavy job. Changing a toilet is almost as bad. Good luck, Doc.

The first time my water heater failed here.  I went to the home improvement and got another for $250 and installed it myself.  I started with my home warranty soon afterwards.  The next one, in 2002 had to have a plumber retrofit the supply to have backflow prevention crap.  The whole installation cost $2100.  My copay at the time was $55.

The one we have in MO was installed in 1977. It is a Rheem and has always been on a water softener. It is a 30 gallon. I put stainless steel elements in it in 2001, and they are still working. The old ones were fine, but I wanted stainless steel elements. Hard water is what kills water heaters. Theoretically, they should last nearly forever. I have had to also put a new washer in the drain valve a few years ago. That will probably have to be done again before long.

It is downright COLD here in Ohio. It's been in the 20's during the day for almost a week now. We also got hit with about 2-3" of snow. Along with air temps being in the 20's we have had winds between 10-20 MPH, which makes the windchill factor temp between -1 and 10 degrees depending on the exact wind speed. Now the normal temp for this time of year is usually in the 40's and 50's during the day and into high 30's at night with some occasional snow but nothing usually more than a dusting to an inch. We usually don't get this kind of weather until mid to late January and it can last until early to mid March. Oh and you Arizona guys Razz  lol!
