Using a Signal Generator as a Transmitter

Post by frankb on Fri Oct 17, 2014 10:15 pm

I am using my old PrecisionE200C signal generator as a transmitter with a tape recorder and a CD player.
I put the audio output into the "Ext. Modulation" jacks and tune the generator to the freq. I want to listen on- even Short Wave!
Fidelity is not as good as a specialty built unit, but works well enough for my ears.

A General Radio 805-C standard signal generator with a 1000-P10 loop antenna makes a dandy transmitter, as the 805-C external input provides high-fidelity modulation (50 Hz to 15 kHz) with less than 4% envelope distortion at 80% modulation, and less than 10% envelope distortion at 100% modulation. That antenna was designed to create a standard field for sensitivity measurements on receivers with built-in antennas (say, my Zenith 10-S-669 with its Wavemagnet antenna).

This was my QRP transmitter for several sessions of the morning Peanut Whistle net.  700mW on 80 Meter A.M. phone.
