New IF transformers

Post by Wildcat445 on Sun Sep 21, 2014 12:01 pm

Does anyone sell new IF transformers? With SMD becoming a more prevelant problem, it seems like that would be a sellable item.

My success at remedying SMD has been variable, at best. Older eyes and arthritis makes tedious work like that difficult. I only have a couple radios so afflicted, but those are gonna be shelf queens until new transformers become available. And, on a really depressing note, ALL my Magnavox stereos have the potential for SMD. Crying or Very sad

I've thought about a side business.... Very Happy

Of course, I'd have to charge "too much" to make it worth my time....

I suppose if it was a pity story like someone's beloved heirloom or a Concert Grand Very Happy

By the way folks, don't ever fool yourself in trying to buy New Old Stock IF cans. Mother Nature and Father Time still affect them in that dusty box. Storage also plays a roll.

There's no such thing as "new" replacements other than new old stock.

And the problem with Magnavox stereos is that there are two IF cans mounted on the PCB IF strip that will make repairing SMD even more difficult. I have personally never heard of a Magnavox stereo with SMD. Not even an older one from the late '40's or early '50's with SMD, so maybe Magnavox instruments are fairly immune thus far. Doc, you should start repairing IF cans for a fee for those who can't or don't want to do it themselves. I'm not sure an AA5 would be worth it, but a big Magnavox or Zenith stereo sure would. Hallicrafters radios even have the potential for SMD, and I have heard of some so afflicted.

If there were IF Xfmrs in ge-tar amps, your way would be paved with gold! Very Happy

Sad, but true, 75. Sad

Hey, Doc, I don't suppose you could figure out a way to put an IF transformer in a gee-tar amp, could you? Then AES would carry them. Laughing

You would only have to say they use them and price them out of sight and you're in like flynn!

Got it, 75. I forgot about the pricing. I guess that is why I'm not rich. Rolling Eyes

I am getting to the point where I find them harder and harder to fix too. It helps to cut out the internal cap. connections and put the new ones outside the can...but still...

I would buy new IF cans if they were affordable. The closest thing I've found is Coilcraft has a lot of plain coils and custom wound coils if the problem is not SMD but the coil itself.
