""""" WHEN A TELEVISION RECEIVER IS PURCHASED in the United States, you can take it anywhere in this country, plug it in, pull up the "rabbit ears," and tune in a station. That is possible because we have national broadcasting standards that are common throughout the country. Yet, one time commercial television was going to be introduced to the American public without standards. Fortunately, that "experiment" ended before it even started. But let's not get ahead of the story! """

In Québec we have no longer this signal now.. we need a converter or a cable provider Sad

For the channel 1. i don't know , no one use it..

It is amazing to me that TV was developed at all. No computers, just good old American ingenuity.

If I understand correctly, Channel 1 is used as the Intermediate Frequency (IF) in TV. I don't remember the frequency, so perhaps Bill or Doc Radio could chime in and enlighten us. I am going on memory here, so I am subject to being wrong.

From the article in my original post;

RCA"s experimental station quickly received a permit for one of those new television allocations and selected Channel 1

This is what happened to channel 1.  Wink

An Interesting Sidelight, Look at the entry for July 30, 1943. If you bought into ABC's myth that the network was founded in 1953, this puts the lie to it. http://www.bostonradio.org/timeline/timeline-40s

More info;

As a result of hearings held on March 18, 1940, the FCC assigned FM a continuous band of frequencies (done to simplify tuner design), and expanded the FM allocation to include the frequencies from 42 to 50 MHz. The new allocation included the 44 to 50 MHz band that had previously been assigned to Channel 1.

But that is not what happened to Channel 1! The television channels were renumbered with Channel 1 now assigned to the 50-56 MHz band and the remaining channels were shifted around the spectrum. But when the smoke cleared, the television industry had lost one channel, leaving it with 18 allocations.

The reason for channel 1's failure is simple. The frequencies were too close to channel 2, and, were causing interference, so, in 1948 it was eliminated.
