Hello from Star City Antique Radios and Test Equipment

Post by Dale H. Cook on Sat May 10, 2014 3:13 pm

I am new here, but am a long-time collector and restorer of vintage electronics including pre-WWII radios, old test equipment and vintage electronic instruments. You can get a good idea of my electronic interests from my Star City Antique Radios and Test Equipment site:

I especially enjoy using my home shop, which is compact but pretty well equipped:

Can you point me to an example? Are you getting to the Re-Captcha that you have to go through for any download?

Yes I am! The one I have tried is the big one several times (12 to be exact) and I finally gave up. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I just tried it again and it was all numbers and heres what I got
" 502 Bad Gateway nginx"
Captcha is a good Idea but it goes way beyond the bounds of old fogies like myself. LOL
The Captcha words that (half them are not even words unless your related to MORK and Mindy  clown )are skewed are very hard as the letters seem to be touch with no separation.
And have you tried the sound? Goodness Gracious its so garbled I can only make out 2 or three letters at the most.

However I was able to download a couple small ones after a few tries.

could be a Google server problem all the way down to cookies on your browser, but I doubt the later as I did more downloads after the previous posting.

I tried a quick trip around the site and all systems were go, down to the captchas and download windows. I wanted to make sure I could visit at my leisure and I am looking forward to it!

Re: Hello from Star City Antique Radios and Test Equipment

Post by Dale H. Cook on Fri May 16, 2014 11:02 pm

The problem that is sometimes cropping up (and I just got it for the IRC download) is a problem at my hosting service. Nginx is a reverse proxy server, and the one used for my site seems to be gagging on very large downloads, and there are several files on my site that are over 100 mb. Possible causes are an Apache configuration error or a problem with the PHP daemon on my host site. In any case the problem is at the host site, because every time I upload a PDF file I then download it to make sure the scraper-protection measures are functioning correctly and that I can retrieve the file properly. I have a trouble ticket open about this problem, which may be related to the fact that I store files outside the root to make them difficult to scrape.

I am not a fan of Re-Captcha either, but it was the fastest way that I could put a solid anti-scraper measure in place (I used to get scraped frequently). Many people find Re-Captcha or any secure captcha difficult to deal with, and that is a growing concern among site administrators. Does anyone have suggestions for other tests that a human can pass and a 'bot cannot, that might be easier to deal with than a captcha? Some that I have seen require a visitor to answer a question such as "What is 3 + 4?" or "What letter follows Q in the English alphabet?" Another challenge presents a set of thumbnail photos, and the visitor has to pick the one that does not fit, such as eight photos of kittens and one of a puppy. Any such measure is a Turing test - one that a human can pass but that a computer program cannot pass.

I don't know Dale but for ' What letter follows Q in the English alphabet ', you know in french there's no difference between french or and English Wink... "What is 3 + 4?" and addition is okay to prove that we aren't a robot. oh, and welcome to the forum  study
