Thought I'd drop in and say hi.
Several handles here I recognize. Glad of it. Been missing you lugs. Ole Moses-007 recommended that I take a break and drop in to say hi. So hi.
With the ARF being down this past week I've actually hunkered down and got some serious radio restoration accomplished, such as it is. Things have gone well. How's everyone else doing? Got your $100,000.00 stimulus checks yet?
Regards,
John

Atta boy Big John. Everytime I hear Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John" I think of John. And I call him Big John when I see him!

I've got the original rare version.
"At the bottom of that mine, lies one hell of a man. Big John."
My sisters bought that record before the radio ban.

That may be as rare as the original Louie Louie.
I'll have to listen to my 45 of Big Bad John again tomorrow to see how mine ends.

It truly amazes me that songs like that and "Wake Up Little Suzie" were banned from airplay. Today, songs that contain the F-bomb are common and played on almost all "pop" stations. It's sad really.
I remember when I was young, my parents didn't have to worry or monitor me if were watching TV or listening to the radio.

Re: Thought I'd drop in and say hi.
The record, as I recall, was recalled after just one week.
Radio stations received many complaints from parents about "swearing", and, radio stations immediately took it off the air.
About two weeks later, they came out with the million seller later version.

That's strange. My version, which I just listened to, says "at the bottom of this mine lies one big, big man. Big John." I wonder if they released three versions of this song? What's interesting is that earlier in this song there is a reference to this "man made hell." Evidently no one objected to that.

Re: Thought I'd drop in and say hi.
I've been looking for the original 45 of that song for awhile. I believe it was given two titles. The original song was "Big John." When the last line was changed from "At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man" to "At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man", the title on the record was changed to "Big Bad John" to make it easy to differentiate.
I would also love to have the 45 of Louie Louie by Richard Barry. I've got recordings of both this and of Big John, but not the 45's. Another I'm looking for is the other version of "Love Potion #9" by the Clovers. The last line goes, "I had so much fun that I'm going back again, I wonder what would happen with love potion number 10." This might have been released on an album only, or some other format; I don't know for sure.

You guys have taught me something about Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John that I never knew before this thread.
