Anyone know of US Telegraph history details?

Post by N7ZAL on Sat Apr 12, 2014 8:33 pm

Does anyone know, or can they point me to resources, that will answer some technical questions about 1870's telegraphs? Specifically, what voltage was used, the resistance of sounders, what type of power sources (batteries?), current through the wires, and if they used a "repeater" to raise a lower voltage over long distances? I've checked several online sources, including http://www.telegraph-history.org/

Does this help? (Maybe just as a starting point...)

Thanks Doc, and that does help with my repeater question. I figured they must have used them but didn't know the specifics.

Thanks and that helps me also. I'm a ham CW operator and some of those keys look painful to use, especially all day. Wink

The previous book I mentioned looked so good I ordered a print replica copy from Amazon. For serious reading and research I find it easier to read from paper than a screen...especially hundreds of pages.

William Maver also wrote a comprehensive book on telegraphy, under various titles and editions. Lindsay reprinted one of them.
